In short: Ran like clockwork ... the race, not me!! In full: Well-organised number collection available the day before so that there's not a scrum on the day; plenty of parking, loos, facilities and distraction at the start; well-marked start funnel and course; friendly marshals and supporters; closed roads; plentiful mile and km markers (once you twigged that they weren't just ads for the sponsor!); nice scenery around the river and Cookham; ... if there was some way to make the last 100 meters or so NOT uphill, it'd be perfect!! And the wait for the chip times was a bit agonising, but worth it to see that I got a PB :-) Date of review: September 13, 2013
In short: Always a pleasure In full: This event only started in 2011 and I have run all 3. Every year they tweak the organisation and it just gets better and better. From the free parking when you arrive, to the well-organised race village, the lovely, almost flat route with its views of the Thames and the very welcome shade from the tree lined roads, to the smooth finish and iconic medal with the race date on, this one will be in my race calendar for years to come. Can't wait til I've run it 5 times and my race number changes colour! Date of review: September 13, 2013
In short: Getting better each year In full: Third year of running and they have ironed out many of the previous issues. I like this race as it is flat and I can focus on speed. Only annoying thing was the finish was moved from last year so I was out of energy on the last 100 metres. My fault need to pay attention more!! See you next year Date of review: September 10, 2013
In short: Plenty of Good Points, A Few Not So Good In full: On the whole a well organised event. No chip time results through yet, only gun time courtesy of the local paper. If there's a good reason for this, it should be stated on the website. Scenery wasn't as good as I'd been led to believe from pictures but I understand that the route has undergone one major and one minor change to alleviate congestion issues, which is a fair trade-off I suppose. In common with many other Garmin wearers, I couldn't get a satellite signal at the start - shame but not the fault of the organisers. Mile and km markers but unfortunaely not very accurately placed - 3 miles and 5km are NOT the same! Other than aforementioned gripes race was flat, well supported and well marshalled. No goody bag was promised so not fussed to not get one. There is usually a cost to organisers for medals, t-shirts and goody bags, which will be passed on in the entry fee so I was OK with just a medal for this one. Date of review: September 9, 2013
In short: Good half marathon on flat scenic course In full: Well organised and marshaled. The only real issue is the tight first few sections getting out of town (not any worse than bunching at some of the larger races I've run) but after that it's nice and open and quite scenic as you head toward Cookham - much prettier than Reading.
I liked the fact that there were KM and mile markers as I find it easier to pace in KMs rather than miles. Date of review: September 9, 2013
In short: really enjoyed it In full: First time i have ever done this race, very well organised, great mix of runners, flat and fast course apart from the twists and turns on the underpass.other race organisers should take note of the baggage system !! top class in and out in seconds. will be back again next year. In short: Very well organised friendly race. In full: Organisation was spot on. Mile markers were easily visible.Lots of encouraging marshalls and groups of locals who kindly turned out to offer support. Personally I prefer a one lap course but it was good to see that the problem with the underpass has been sorted out this year. I'll be back again next year. Thanks PP Date of review: September 9, 2013
In short: Superb event from Purple Patch In full: Great race all around, pancake flat, great crowds this year, super-slick registration and race village etc. There have been some teething problems in the previous years, but this is a seriously good event now, fault free in my book. If only I was a little fitter!!!
Sign me up for next time :-) Date of review: September 9, 2013
