In short: Very nice half-marathon In full: Great course, with relatively flat off-road trail sections switching with rather 'undulating' bits of road. Lovely views of Bewl Water throughout. Thankfully the weather had been very dry for weeks as it would have been a mud-bath otherwise... Well stocked aid stations, with friendly marshalls. Only (minor) issue was the lack of an aid station around the last major hill at ~19km; otherwise, organisation was excellent. Would run this event again! Date of review: May 6, 2013
In short: Hard work but great race. In full: I competed in the half marathon, which I really enjoyed. The hills and running surface were tough going, but the atmosphere was great. Very well organised and scenery fantastic. Will definitely do this one again. Date of review: May 6, 2013
In short: Fantastic event organised by runners for runners. In full: Well organised race, with well stocked water / aid points, each with plenty of water, squash, cakes crisps and sweets and a team of friendly marshals encouraging the runners, who kept smiling even when the weather took a turn for the worst. When we finished we received a great t-shirt that actually fitted (The London Marathon organisers could learn a thing or two from this!. Well done Hermes, and thank you marshals, we'll be back next year. Date of review: May 6, 2013
In short: Great event, superb scenery. In full: Glad I wore trail shoes - uneven in many places; no 'proper' path (I like cross-country - so I loved it). Would be very slippery if wet. Funny that the pre-race instructions were done by a bloke who whispered (into a strong wind); didn't hear a word of it. I guess he said 'when I say 'go' run for 26.2 miles'.
I'd love to know what others thought the difficulty factor was; I'd guess it's 5-10 mins harder than a flat road marathon. Date of review: May 5, 2013
In short: Really nice trail run... harder than you might think too! In full: Lovely atmosphere at this event, which is put on by a team who very obviously care a lot - and know a lot - about running. The route involves two laps around Bewl Water; mainly undulating trails around the lake shore, with a few country lanes thrown in too. It's relatively flat by trail standards, but there are a few bigger climbs towards the end of each circuit, although these are all on the road sections. Still, they're long enough to hurt on lap 2! The scenery is lovely enough to make the second lap every bit as aesthetically pleasing as the first! The organisation was first class. Pre-race comms were timely and informative; registration ran like clockwork; feed-stations were well stocked and ably managed by friendly and encouraging marshals; chip timing was integrated into race numbers and spot on; and the medal and t shirt were both the best that I have received from any event, ever. So, all in all, this is an event that is definitely going on my annual fixture list. A pleasure to take part in. Thanks Hermes Running!
In short: Well organised and interesting trail run In full: Ran the Half Marathon. First competitive running event I've ever done but will definitely be back for more! Very well organised with caring and encouraging event organisers and marshalls/feed station staff. This year the course was very dry and hard underfoot, making it easy(ish!) going. In a wet year I imagine the mud would make this a different story...still fun though I'm sure! There are a few draggy road climbs, but nothing too bad...if you live and run in this area you'll be plenty used to these kind of undulations. Would highly recommend to anyone, either new to it or experienced. Date of review: May 5, 2013
In short: best trail marathon ive done In full: the marshals and stocked water stations were very good, lots of sweets cakes gels and water of course, all in on the price...... Very good value race. Limited numbers for race 250 marathon and 250 for the half so book early.... Having said all that this is not a race for beginers to the marathon running world as the terrain can be challinging.... In short: Challenging but worth it In full: The organisation was excellent and the marshals on the course were excellent. The course itself was challenging and pretty scenic, there were a few dull bits like the couple of long roads which mentally made things harder but you expect these things. The bit that really caught me out was the lack of spectator support so it felt like an overlong training run rather than a race.
However, the competitors were good fun and the spectators that were there cheered us on. The medal and T-Shirt were brilliant and the aid stations were very well stocked.
I'm unlikely to do this one again but you never know I didn't run a great race so maybe I've got a point to prove Date of review: May 5, 2013
