In short: Really nice trail run... harder than you might think too! In full: Lovely atmosphere at this event, which is put on by a team who very obviously care a lot - and know a lot - about running. The route involves two laps around Bewl Water; mainly undulating trails around the lake shore, with a few country lanes thrown in too. It's relatively flat by trail standards, but there are a few bigger climbs towards the end of each circuit, although these are all on the road sections. Still, they're long enough to hurt on lap 2! The scenery is lovely enough to make the second lap every bit as aesthetically pleasing as the first! The organisation was first class. Pre-race comms were timely and informative; registration ran like clockwork; feed-stations were well stocked and ably managed by friendly and encouraging marshals; chip timing was integrated into race numbers and spot on; and the medal and t shirt were both the best that I have received from any event, ever. So, all in all, this is an event that is definitely going on my annual fixture list. A pleasure to take part in. Thanks Hermes Running!
In short: Well organised and interesting trail run In full: Ran the Half Marathon. First competitive running event I've ever done but will definitely be back for more! Very well organised with caring and encouraging event organisers and marshalls/feed station staff. This year the course was very dry and hard underfoot, making it easy(ish!) going. In a wet year I imagine the mud would make this a different story...still fun though I'm sure! There are a few draggy road climbs, but nothing too bad...if you live and run in this area you'll be plenty used to these kind of undulations. Would highly recommend to anyone, either new to it or experienced. Date of review: May 5, 2013
In short: best trail marathon ive done In full: the marshals and stocked water stations were very good, lots of sweets cakes gels and water of course, all in on the price...... Very good value race. Limited numbers for race 250 marathon and 250 for the half so book early.... Having said all that this is not a race for beginers to the marathon running world as the terrain can be challinging.... In short: Challenging but worth it In full: The organisation was excellent and the marshals on the course were excellent. The course itself was challenging and pretty scenic, there were a few dull bits like the couple of long roads which mentally made things harder but you expect these things. The bit that really caught me out was the lack of spectator support so it felt like an overlong training run rather than a race.
However, the competitors were good fun and the spectators that were there cheered us on. The medal and T-Shirt were brilliant and the aid stations were very well stocked.
I'm unlikely to do this one again but you never know I didn't run a great race so maybe I've got a point to prove Date of review: May 5, 2013
In short: Great race, fantastic marshals, outstanding organisation In full: I ran the marathon today and its 2 loops of Bewl water and a little loop at the start. The course was undulating to say the least but its absolutely stunning and a lovely place to run in. We had all weathers today but everything in the aid stations worked perfectly with some very friendly and helpful marshals.
The aid stations are roughly 3-4 miles apart and it was plentiful for me. Gels, banana, jelly babies, crisps, cake and flapjacks (the most delicious flapjack ive ever tasted!) and plenty of water/squash.
I think you can tell when a runner organises events because its the little touches in the organisation that make you go: thank god, that's great! The signalling was perfect and easy to see and despite it being a swirvy course - you never doubted what direction to go. This is great for me as I get lost running familiar routes! The organisation for number pick up was clear, easy and we wasted no time in doing it. Baggage was easy and secure.
The course underfoot today was a lot of dry mud so trail shoes are definitely a bonus here. I ran in road shoes and felt the difference.
A great (huge) medal and quality tech tee that I'd wear again.
A big thank you to the organisers for organising a low key event that ran like clockwork and was definitely easy for a runner to do. The crowd and atmosphere is so welcoming that I'd recommend the event to newbies.
Other RDs should learn from the professional work of these guys on how to run a race.
In short: Well done Hermes Running, another great race. Love this year's medal and the technical t-shirt too. In full: Super marshals, really encouraging, well stocked feed stations, well marked route. It's not a PB course, but a very enjoyable race for a bank holiday weekend. Love Saturday marathons! Thank you. Date of review: May 4, 2013
