In short: Lives up to its name, hard. In full: Personally I found this a very tough run but great fun. With not wearing a watch(because of fears of ruining it in the bog)I found it quite strange having no idea of the distance I'd covered. It was like being asked to run through some woods until asked to stop. The camraderie however made it worthwhile. The hill at the start was by far the worst...then again the zig -zag of up hill, down hill was murder too. Car parking, yes not good. Bog of doom, great. Race great. Ta. Date of review: November 8, 2010

In short: An enjoyable run marred by the shortened distance and faulty chip timing. In full: The 'as billed' 10-12 miles actually turned out to be just over 8.5mi, which left quite a bit in the bag at the finish. Hellish? Not really; more of a Challenging Trail Fun Run. Incidentally, out of the five in our group who checked their chip times online today, not one was remotely correct. Some were adrift by over an hour! Not a major issue, but it's a bit pointless costing for a chip system that seemingly doesn't work. Date of review: November 8, 2010

In short: Not for the short, or inexperienced In full: I'm a 4ft 11" runner and if I'd done this alone I could have risked serious injury. The Aftermath is essentially a muddy custard bath mixed in with a few paths and lots of hills. If you haven't included rock climbing in your prep then now is the time to start! Lots of scrambling up vertical faces clinging onto weeds and trying not to look down.
I've done plenty of half marathons, 10k's, club events etc. and this knocked me for six.
Don't do this if you consider yourself to be even the slightest bit inexperienced, or if you don't fancy the idea of potentially being sucked under in a bog (which I was)!!
Good fun, but I'll never do it again.
The organisation was pretty poor. Both waves had to go at once with the Aftermath which meant all the pushy competitors had to elbow the slower runners out of the way on the first hill - not very nice. The car park situation was horrendous.
It kind of felt like making money took priority over actual organisation and safety. Pity really, it could have been a really good race. Date of review: November 8, 2010

In short: What a way to spend Sunday morning! In full: First time on Hellrunner and I have not been able to stop talking about it since. The course was brilliant though I have to agree with other posters about the distance. Rather stupidily wanted to be tested over 11 or 12 miles not the 8.8 some have quoted. With regards to parking, use a small car! I was forced to park on a country lane by the stewards and was out on the A roads within minutes. It meant a longer walk to the race but I wasn't in a rush to start!
Everything about the course was spot on, the ridiculous amount of mud, the depth of the bogs (and the smell), the steepness of the hills (both directions) and variety of scenery. Loved every minute and now have only the many scratches on my legs to remember it by. Warning for the hellrunners to come, I am 6'5" and still struggled in the bogs, I'm sure some of the little guys were actually treading water at some points in the bog of doom! In short: Muddier than last year....fantastic! In full: Loved it last year, loved it even more this year. I didn't get embroiled in the car parking nightmare, opting instead for the gravelled car park and the long walk to the start. Baggage area was great for an unaccompanied runner like me!
First hill still horrible, but the bogs and the mud were better than last year by miles! The first stinky one was great, and the party atmosphere amongst crowd and runners was fantastic. Music by the bogs was a nice touch, and the shortened finish section meant I could get cleaned off whilst the mud was still wet!
Great t-shirt and goody bag.... I'll be back for more next year..... again! Date of review: November 8, 2010
