In short: Disappointing about the car parking, lack of start line, no start on chip timing, and toilet queue. In full: Hard to know what to expect with my first half marathon, but was gutted to miss the start and feel left behind (despite arriving Southend an hour before race start but made to sit in traffic for 45mins). Otherwise the volunteers and drink stops were good. Date of review: June 11, 2007
In short: Slightly disappointed In full: Was not expecting PB race due to weather, but managed one none the less! Start was chaos, no identified start line, the fun run had a big start hoarding but the half nothing! No championchip timers at the start so what was the point?
Plenty of water but it tasted a bit stagnant? Had 97 on the bottles perhaps thats when they were filled!
Marshals were very good, very helpful and interractive. Nice enough course.
Finish also a bit chaotic, could do with some tents for shade this time of year.
Overall, OK race, organisers had good intentions. Date of review: June 11, 2007
In short: sort out the parking In full: the parking problems will only be resloved, when on leaving the car park you dont have to cross the end of the course. l finshed in 1.30 and it still took me 40 minutes to get out. The later runners are still waiting to get home. well done the marshalls and helpers on water stations etc as always a great job. Date of review: June 11, 2007
In short: Rating is for the BTMK Fun Run In full: A great fun run ideal for first timers, who can stand at the back and avoid all the junior club runners at the front! Getting to car park at the start was a nightmare; road closed too early and wasn't helped by a boot sale on the way! Hello to the fellas dressed as a nun, monk and emu! Date of review: June 11, 2007
In short: I found a solution to the car park problems In full: For some reason I got into my head that the race started at 11am and subsequently arrived at 10.25 with no problems getting parked at all! it took me a further 15 minutes to realise that there weren't any other half marathoners about just the fun runners coming in from the end of their race. This is when I realised that I must have had the time wrong so I had a quick word with one of the organisers who allowed me to start the race 40 minutes late and assured me that the marshalls and drink stations would still be out. Apart from a couple of sections where I managed to go the wrong way(not far) there were marshalls still on the course and the people at the first drink station who had packed up were kind enough to fetch me some water from their car for which I was very grateful considering the heat. I managed to catch up with the back of the race at 6 miles and so my lateness became less of an issue in the second half of the race. The reasons my ratings are not higher for this race are that I don't like to off road section of the race it hurts my feet through my racing flats, getting to and from the race by car can be a nightmare although this year it seemed better and I also dislike running in the heat which isn't helped by the 1.5 mile uphill drag at the end. In short: Good organization..OK course...But the last mile is a killer. Will be a lot better if energy drinks are provided during race. getting out of the car Park after the race is worst than the 13 mile race itself... Date of review: June 11, 2007
In short: Disappointing In full: This was my first half marathon and I found it a bit disappointing. The organisation at the start was abysmal - huge traffic queues because they had closed the road too early and then there was no indication where the start line was - we crossed the start not knowing we had. The event was advertised as having Championchip timing but there was no mat at the start - to me there's not much point unless you have a mat at the start as well as the end. They also said t-shirts - there were none. The course was nice in parts but I thought it was crazy trying to put over 1000 runners on a narrow footpath on a busy street when the road wasn't closed - we ended up having to dodge parked and oncoming cars for much of the road sections. Otherwise, the marshals and water stations were fine. Wouldn't do this event again though. Date of review: June 11, 2007
In short: Great day out In full: My first race so I've no frame of reference but I had a really good time - arrived by train which was straightforward. One to note considering others descriptions of the car parking.
Was really pleased to get a quick shower and get away within about 30 mins of finishing the race.
Clocked 01:48:05 which was better than I expected - course was fairly fast but last mile was testing. There's a decent pub on the way back to Southend East Station where I enjoyed a well deserved pint and some grub. Date of review: June 11, 2007
