In short: Not my bag In full: At the risk of being in the minority I did not enjoy this marathon. There were things I could have done better to make it more enjoyable,I should have trained for more stamina on Hills as to my mind it was either very uphill or very downhill ( I know its the lake district ) This trashed my legs and by mile 21 I was praticly crippled. I should have carried more water because as the run went on The 3 mile distance between stations was to my mind, to far apart to stay hydrated. Also the roads were not closed and as it was a busy sunday I got squashed against the side of the road by cars on a few occasions, I was later told by the B & B owner who was a marshel that a runner got hit by a car in Windimere, he was not badly hurt but it did end his marathon at mile 20. I accept that the setting is second to none, the lake district is the best looking place on Earth after all. But if you are doing this for the first time or like me for your first marathon be aware it is very hilly. There is not enough water stations to forgo not carrying fluid between them, paticulary if it is a hot day and your not a fast runner, by that I mean like me it takes you a while to cover the three miles between stations. I know I am probaly the only negative review for this marathon but its points that some may find usefull. Date of review: May 25, 2012
In short: Hilly and beautiful. In full: This is just the most fantastic race. The views are perfection, the organisation was perfect and the hills a little energy sapping! Got severe cramp at mile 21 which continued until I finished, yet still loved every minute of it. Can't wait to do it again and all for a worthy cause. 10 in 10ers truly amazing as well. In short: In short fantastic but challenging marathon In full: This was my second marathon and being in the Lake District I expected a few hills! The weather was amazing, the lake was like a mirror and the scenery was amazing. Crowds were fantastic and it was so well organised.
I did find it tough with a nice little hill at mile 7 but for every up there is a down. I would certainly recommend it to anyone. Well done Brathay! Date of review: May 23, 2012
In short: Beautiful scenery and fantastic weather this year to boot In full: This marathon is truly beautiful and a lovely atmosphere. It is hilly but not as bad as I remembered it the friendly atmosphere more than compensates for this. Had a great run til mile 17 when my knee went off track!!! still completed but 18 mins slower than I wanted, hey ho will have to try again!! Date of review: May 23, 2012
In short: Favourite marathon so far...... In full: Not just a race but an occasion. Brilliant carnival atmosphere at the hall for supporters to be kept entertained. The inspiration of the 10 in 10ers. Amacing scenary - particular on the first rolling half. And if carlsberg made supportive and friendly marshalls then they were at this event - brilliant. Thankyou. In short: Best to ignore the watch and enjoy the beautiful scenes. In full: I ran this last year and it was the hardest race I'd ever encountered; had the hobble the last six miles. Notwithstanding the pain, this is one of most beautiful race routes I'd ever encountered that I had to come back this year.
The organisation of the race is excellent, the atmosphere brilliant and the whole family of runners (elite to complete beginners) were all welcomed.
The race route was fantastic and the beauty of the the Lake District was there to be admired in near-tranquillity. The peace was broken by a delightful crowd at Newby Bridge; their cheers adding more bounce to otherwise tired legs.
I was slightly better prepared this year and with a bit more respect for the course, beat last year's time.
A fantastic day out and not just for the runners. There was plenty to do for none runners. My family went off on a fun mini-day trip and were back in good time to enjoy the entertainment at the Brathay estate and cheer my wearily legs in.
I would definitely recommended this event. Date of review: May 22, 2012
