In short: Lots of twists and turns and much hillier 2nd time around! In full: Not a bad marathon for the money but I have to agree with other posts about the less than scenic route and the many twists and turns around housing estates, parks etc to make up the miles. The 2nd lap was pretty lonely but you have to expect that with a 2 lapper. Nice finish with good background music but the medal was terrible - very cheap and tinny and doesn't even mention the marathon! Date of review: September 3, 2012
In short: overall well organised- but I'm sure the hills were steeper on the 2nd lap. In full: Slick organisation- started on time- plenty of marshalls and good crowd support in places. Lots of water stations and nice finishing funnel with DJ shouting out finishers' names was a nice touch. Goody bag a bit poor. Big down side was the fact that the race wasn't closed to traffic- so especially on the 2nd lap you had to check and sometimes wait whilst crossing roads, mavouvre around cars and parked vehciles, buses etc! In short: Lonely 2nd lap In full: My home town marathon and whilst the scenery and the route aint exactly top notch, this event is ok in my view. On the second lap it can get lonely and at times isolated but that is expected. For the entry fee, the rewards are good and the free hot shower makes such a difference- you dont get that at London do ya ? A few extra marshalls would be good and to be honest, the medal was c**p ! It aint even got the date/year on it,poor quality. Anyway, thanks to all involved today-well done. Date of review: September 3, 2012
In short: A good day out In full: My first time at Wolverhampton although it's pretty close to home and was my 8th marathon and fourth this year. As I'm taking part in the London to Brighton Ultra on the 30th Sept I decided to do this marathon as a last long training run and didn't intend to run it at anything faster than four hours. However I very quickly settled into the informal spirit of the race and was very pleased to finish in 03:34 and my first marathon negative split.
The start was a bit chaotic, with cyclists turning up very late for their start and forcing their way through assembled runners. There was no time penning so it was pretty much a free for all. I did enjoy the "Jamaican Bob Sled Team" who were a lot of fun and were responsible no doubt for lots of smiles on faces.
The route wasn't particularly spectacular or memorable although there were some pretty sections along the canals. There did appear to be a lot of running through housing estates with various bemused residents peering out from their front doors. There wasn't a huge amount of support on the route, but what there was was really friendly and enthusiastic. The second lap was a bit grim and lonely at times, with the traffic reasserting itself on the open road sections after the half-marathon masses had finished. The finish was excellent and overall the organisation was very good. I parked for £2 at the Molyneux and the five minute walk was a perfect warm-up/cool down.
I wasn't expecting this to be a London, and to be honest I hadn't heard great things about this marathon, but I really enjoyed the race and would definately run it again. The informality and low-key approach was actually refreshing compared to some events and the people of Wolverhampton did a good job for us. Date of review: September 2, 2012
In short: fair enough In full: having ran the half last year I stepped it up to the full. 2nd lap was pretty uninspiring in my opinion. The support was thin on the ground but very very good. The course was hillier than I remembered. The run into West Park was brilliant. Goody bag/medal/t shirt was very good for the entry price. Back to the half next year. In short: Thank you wolverhampton In full: A good event for the price. A great start and finish point with plenty of entertainment. Loved the tannoy on the way in. Plenty of markers and water points. Helpers and St John did a great job. 2 lap marathons are not usually my thing but I can cope with Wolverhampton. A very twisty course and a fair few built up areas. Some long uphill drags so maybe not everyones ideal 2 lap marathon. Thank you everyone. I enjoyed the day and a bonus to have the showers after. Finished in 3hr 24min much to my delight. In short: I liked it! In full: Whilst I can appreciate the negative reviews from the front runners as that must have been incredibly annoying, I can say from an average runner's point of view that this isn't half bad. I think it definitely has PB potential and would be a nice introduction to the world of half marathons for a beginner. The support was ok- it serves as a reminder that not all half marathons are going to have the same atmosphere as the big ones such as the Bupa Great Runs. I was grateful for the support that was there- they appreciate a breathless 'Thanks!' as much as we appreciate the fact they came out to clap us. Parking wasn't a mega jaunt from the start line and it was great that there was a nice charity feel to it. Not an all-time fave but I'll definitely do it next year. Date of review: September 2, 2012
In short: I found the organisation fine. I'd say the course is quite undulating, limited crowd support in places. The medal, t shirt and goody bag were good particularly considering the bargain entry fee. Date of review: September 2, 2012
In short: Missing sign/marshall meant half a mile extra, no PB, or podium In full: Ok so the course itself is pretty dismal. No scenery of note, and it is remarkably twisty - think the London Olympic Marathon. There were very small pockets of support, but mostly it is you and a housing estate on your own.
It was beginner friendly, with lots of water stops. However for me the worst part was a missing marshall that meant at least 20 of the front runners (positions 4 onwards), went an extra up to half a mile the wrong way. Really depressing and hard to motivate yourself, especially when you are well on for a PB. Even worse was finding out at the end that the same thing happened last year (in the same place)
I will never do it again, and I wouldn't suggest anyone else do either. There are much nicer places to run. Date of review: September 2, 2012
