In short: Great race! In full: Beautiful course, great and plentiful marshals, enough water and perfect running weather made Helsby Half a great race again this year. Well done to the organisers, who I'm sure will iron out the wrinkles for the next one - I'll definitely be back for that elusive PB.... Date of review: January 20, 2014
In short: Great value race In full: This was my first time at Helsby Half. A good race, a few hills along the way, a nice long downhill towards the end which helped me get a PB. Nice route through country lanes. Didn't see the problems with baggage collection as got there quite early for pick up, but did notice the bags were all piled up and seemed to be in no particular order. Luckily my bag was sitting on top so could see it. Surely that will be better organised next year. Also not really enough room at the start with cars in carpark, but that is a minor gripe in what was a very successful, very good value race. Will definitely be back. Date of review: January 20, 2014
In short: Great race as always but issues at start and finish In full: This was the ninth time I've run in this race and it's always been run like clockwork but something wasn't quite right this year.
I grew up in Helsby so I despite travelling from Manchester I know the good places to park, meaning I didn't need the bag store which, judging by the queue backing up to the main road as I left, was a godsend.
The start area needs sorting out; people were trying to join from amongst the parked cars at the side which was really dangerous, Asics tape 10 inches off the ground isn't enough to keep people in line. If someone had tripped there would have been an almighty pile-up.
The race itself was the usual glorious experience with enthusiastic and helpful marshals, efficient water stations and great encouragement from spectators.
The finish area was a bit chaotic due to the number of runners milling around despite being told to keep moving.
Overall this race still offers great value for money I was again impressed by the medal and goody bag.
I finished in 1:39 which is my slowest HM since the same race in 2006! I'll perhaps do some training next year. Date of review: January 20, 2014
In short: Great event at a baragin price and well organised In full: Another great event put on by Helsby RC at half the cost of most half marathons around. Great support around the course, great marshaling. Apparantly baggage collection didnt go smoothly but thats a small hitch to a brilliant event in my opinion! Date of review: January 20, 2014
In short: A great popular race organised by runners for runners, recommended. Thankyou Helsby RC In full: A great day out, and for me a great test getting back to peak fitness to miss my sub 1:50 goal by 47 seconds is ok considering the hills . The course has a challenging little hill or rise around mile 9-10. or as we say in Wales Welsh flat. So yes it has flat country lanes with friendly marshals and villagers at key points. Lots of club and other runners from the north West of England, North Wales and further afield show the popularity of this race in its 32nd year. A nice medal and water bottle, and if you wanted you could have bought the technical Tshirt . Yes there may have been a bit of crowding at the start and there was quite a queue for the bags- but come on this is a race run by volunteers. If anyone gave the young volunteers a bit of lip - then remember they're volunteers giving their time up for you. Many runners went for a warm drink inside the clubhouse as the queue went down - sensible . Thanks Helsby I'll be back Date of review: January 20, 2014
In short: excellent race as always in beautiful countryside In full: Ok I see people moaning about the baggage and I agree it was a bit of a disaster, but I see people saying take note from bigger half marathons as they are much better organised, please remember what you paid to enter, and after being heavily involved with the set up this weekend, and now knowing what it takes tomstage an event like this then I think you should be applauding the marshalls and helpers for putting on another superb event at a fraction of the cost of some of these bigger half marathons, one mistake with the baggage a minor blotch on a fantastic day Date of review: January 19, 2014
In short: Good race but could do better In full: Not raced this for 4 years and had forgotten how undulating the course was but it is very scenic and we had perfect weather this year.
However the start and finish areas are cramped and messy. I didn't like the start in the car park with people still filtering in ahead of me from the side as the race started.
The finish area was a complete dog's breakfast and apart from being handed a plastic bag had to hunt down everything else including drinks and the cased medals, which I stumbled across purely by chance in a box at the side.
Fortunately I did not use the baggage facility but was curious as to the long queue forming at the side of the clubhouse.
Marshalls were friendly enough but could have offered more encouragement.
Overall not bad but room for improvement. Date of review: January 19, 2014
In short: Enjoyed the race, although the start was a bit cramped/hectic, the baggage reclaim at the end was a disaster took nearly as long to get my bag as to run the race Date of review: January 19, 2014
In short: nice run. Absolutely shambolic at the finish line and baggage area. In full: My advice is go and see how Chester on Conway organise. Water in cups I am afraid is next to useless. Missed my medal in the massive scrum and went back for it later However the marshals were very good and it seems a friendly set up. My advice is go and see how Chester or Conway organise. One room on the first floor with outside stairs for baggage was recipe for disaster Date of review: January 19, 2014
