In short: love this race but a shame there wasn't water available at 8 miles as advertised In full: this race definitely has pb potential (sea breezes permitting!) and the crowds and marshalls are fab and do Brighton proud. It sounds like a little thing but we'd told there would be water available at 8 miles and there was only lucozade - far too concentrated for me at this stage in a race and I ended up running the second half very dehydrated. I also struggled to squeeze any water out of the pouches available at the other stations. Date of review: February 26, 2013
In short: Beautiful scenery and fast course, organisation fine In full: Yes, the course was long in 2012 but they almost certainly got it right this time and it was a beautiful and fantastically well-supported run in the sunshine.
The Brighton course is fast. The climb at the beginning slows people down but at the turn you have a long down hill section followed by the flat, on Sunday this meant enjoying a strong tail wind. The problem for PBs was that at the final turn you suddenly hit a gale.
People complaining about it being too long again might not understand (a) how courses are measured and (b) how Garmins record distance.
All courses have a tolerance of 0.1% over-distance to ensure they qualify for records and that deviations in runners' routes do not put them under-distance. No under-distance course can qualify for records so the bias is always towards very slight over distance.
Secondly, Garmins and GPS watches simply do not record distance accurately. Runners World has covered this well as has the New York Times. If there are any turns on the course you will lose accuracy. They are a useful guide to pacing but not a reliable measure for distance.
Well done Brighton Date of review: February 26, 2013
In short: Really enjoyed this race, weather was great for Feb and really helped towards the good atmosphere. Organisation appeared to work well, and the park and ride ran like clock work. Date of review: February 23, 2013
In short: Well organised, great atmosphere and good course In full: My second time of running Brighton half and thought a few niggles from last year had been sorted (it seemed like the course had been widened it most places so there was less congestion than last year although there were still a few points which were very narrow).
There's always great support on the streets, the mashalls and volunteers are fantastic and it's a picturesque course running virtually all along the seafront.
Highly recommended for a spring half marathon. Date of review: February 23, 2013
In short: A crowded but well organised race In full: Found the facilities squashed in Madiera Drive and the inevitable queue for the toilets. Exiting out of the finishing area to go into town was tricky. The park and ride worked a treat though. Nice cliff top views of Brighton and race day atmosphere was good. The run was pleasurable after mile 10 but was tricky to pass people in places as this is where I ran my fastest miles. Organisers need to consider the layout at the start/finish and enable more space in the final three miles of the race as I had to be very careful when overtaking. Date of review: February 22, 2013
In short: Course measured long and not enough marshalls In full: As already said the course was long yet again. Inadequate water stations .. miles 3 and 11. Lucazade sport isn`t the same as water . Poor marshalling let spectators all over the start and finish so it was a real struggle to get to the correct place . Toilet facilities hopeless.. loads of people just had to wee on the beach.Plus side was that park and Ride was great . Date of review: February 20, 2013
In short: Running by the seaside In full: Overall, a great course (although slightly narrow in places, resulting in bottlenecks), a nice atmosphere and great medal and goody bag (the crisps were much appreciated and swiftly consumed). Toilets provision was minimal though, I didn't even try to get in the queue. Also, as mentioned by a few people on here, there wasn't enough water (and I wasn't sure about those water 'sacks'). I had a lovely time though and a shiny new HM pb to boot. I would definitely do it again. Date of review: February 20, 2013
In short: Two main problems - toilets and water In full: This is the second year that I have run the Brighton half, so I knew what to expect with the route. I really struggled with the lack of water between mile 3 and mile 11. Although there was lucozade this just isn't enough - particularly as the weather was unseasonably warm. The toilets, or lack of them, was appalling. In the end I had to go on the beach in full view of many dog walkers (sorry to them). The queue was huge and there was only 5 mins until the start. The organisers know how many people are coming so why can't they cater for this? Apart from the above, a well organised race with disappointing elements. Date of review: February 20, 2013
In short: Good course, well organised, busy in parts In full: Second time I've done the Brighton Half and this continues to be a great race. Good course - especially beautiful along the coast on a sunny day.
Friendly and well marshalled course; good support in the latter parts of the course. Date of review: February 20, 2013
