In short: brilliantcrowds In full: first marathon, was great. crowds were brilliant. Could have done without the walk at the end past the bag lorries, i just wanted to collapse at that point. loved the drums etc. going back next year, gunna do it in 3. Date of review: April 16, 2013
In short: generally good and flat, always risk of wind! In full: Was at the elite start and promised less queueing for Loos, this was not the case arrived at 8.20 took 20 minutes to q, only 6 toilets, not enough. Very flat and quick course only a few inclines, unfortunately a strong wind this year, but that cant be helped. The energy block staions were good but werent where i was expecting them from pre race maps. Water pouches were good, although one wasnt ripped and at 25 miles i was too exhausted to try and work out why it wasnt working. Great crowd support nearly all the way round. Entry fee seems high compared to similar events. Took ages to leave the finish area and get to where i needed to be. Date of review: April 15, 2013
In short: Not so good second time around In full: Positives - great scenery, enthusiastic crowds (although less than last year). Negatives - insufficient toilets at start, poor finishing area - would have been useful to have had an exit point for those without baggage to save the long walk past the baggage reclaim area. Extremely difficult to get into town - after running 26.2 miles you begrudge having to fight through everyone. I'm glad I ran it and got a respectable PB, but I won't be returning as I don't think it offers value for money, and the end of race is a shambles. Date of review: April 15, 2013
In short: Great race but still not enough loos at the start In full: Did this race in 2010 and my only disappointment then was the lack of loos at the start. Doesn't seem to have improved in 2013. In my tired and befuddled state I couldn't find my way to the beach village at the end so I'd like to see better sign-posting there. I couldn't really get the hang of the water pouches but I can imagine they create a lot less waste than bottles and I'm all for being green. The right amount of water/fuel stations for me. The marshalls and other volunteers were all wonderful. There was not much in the race packs so I'm sure they could be posted out and kit bags picked up on the day. The crowds make the day special. In short: The weather and crowds made it In full: Far fewer toilets at start than last year, terrible queues. Very congested at start and for first 2-3 miles. Plenty of drink/fuel stations and amazing volunteers, but far too expensive. Date of review: April 15, 2013
In short: Another brilliant BM In full: Excellent organisation, plenty of marshall's, plenty of water/drinks stations and as usual the crowd support was absolutely fantastic. I didn't mind collecting my race pack from the expo, but then I am local. People do know about this in advance, and I'm pretty sure that it is the norm for any big marathon! Definitely recommend this one for all abilities. Great for beginners and great for PB chasers. I just hope it doesn't get too much bigger as there were a couple of points on the course that were quite congested! Date of review: April 15, 2013
In short: Great support from the folk of Brighton but organisation doesn't match entry fee In full: Nice course, mostly flat with a few small inclines in the first half. Fantastically well supported by the locals. Water stations generally well-placed but the pouches are a bit iffy - two of mine didn't work at all. Provision of loos at the start abysmal: for such an expensive event to skimp on this area is unacceptable. No changing tent in finish village resulted in a fair few public indecency offences! Finally the results service is (currently) half-baked: no age categories and no club info. If it weren't for the atmosphere provided by the people of Brighton, this would be a lot of entry fee for not very much race.
Oh yes, and having to attend the expo to collect the race pack was a total headache. What was that supposed to achieve, exactly? Date of review: April 15, 2013
In short: Could try harder - Learn from your mistakes In full: I don't normally write reviews, but was compelled to write a review for Brighton 2013 as the organisation was pretty terrible. Firstly, having to collect the race packs is a con - seems the only reason was to get you in to the expo and spend money. Brighton's meant to be a green city, how is having to travel there twice in two days green? Just go back to sending the race numbers and bags - Please! The Park and Ride was a complete shambles. Despite arriving at Mill Road at 7.20 there were nowhere near enough buses and ended up getting to the bag drop at 8.50 - after the bus dropped us a good 10 minute jog from Preston Park. Stressful and god knows how any first-time marathoners must have been feeling if they weren't nervous enough. Also staring the buses back at 1.30 is ridiculous - if you do a quick (or even quick-ish) time you have to hang around for ages, by which point the buses have so many people waiting it's a nightmare and you can't get on. Lastly, try and split the timing groups a bit more. So many people were in the groups you end up in the wrong place so are either over taking or being over taken which doesn't make for a great start. I've done this race every year so far and it's getting worse, not better. As another reviewer says, there are too many runners for the resources. The crowd support and water/energy are great though. I actually got a £40 early bird place for next year, but is it worth the headache? I'm not sure.
In short: First Marathon, ran in 3hrs 9mins, found it tough, last 5 miles was in strong headwind. Support amazing, park & ride quite stressful. Wished they could send pack in post. Overall v good. Date of review: April 15, 2013
