In short: Brilliant race made very tough by the conditions
In full: I imagine doing this race in good conditions would be a pleasure but, in the heat, it turned into a bit of a battle. The organisation was fantastic. My friend and I arrived a bit late after being sent to the wrong place by TomTom. We phoned ahead and the race organiser was waiting with our numbers for us when we arrived and was really helpful. There was a good bit of banter during the race and the marshalls were fantastic with encouragement and much-needed cold sponges. Will definitely return to this one but hopefully it will be a bit cooler next year. Well done to Mr Milne et al for a tremendous effort in putting on this race.

In short: Hot hot hot
In full: While the organisers cannot arrange shade on the hottest day of the year, what they do deliver is a superbly organised race through picture postcard countryside with ample water stations manned by enthusiastic helpers.
A great event!

In short: Nice no frills marathon
In full: I was running this as past of the District Double with Windermere marathon the next day so wanted to take it easy. If you count this as a trail marathon, it definitely has PB potential, gradual ascent through the first 15-17 miles then fast descent over the last few if your legs can take it.
Don't do it if you want lots of people around you or lots of support, but if you like running by yourself with the odd bit of company in lovely scenery, this is perfect. It got a bit cold and exposed in the downpour this year but Matlock AC looks after its runners really well. Thanks to the water station at mile 19 for providing food from the depths of their car, I was starving!
I would prefer a medal than the mug at the finish and at least something with the year on it, but the bag full of grub was much appreciated.

In short: An excellent race both in adminstration and scenery
In full: No problems with route finding which is unusual for an off road course
Marshalls are very friendly. I like the mug you receive at the end. there is the option to buy a teeshirt.

In short: A gem of a race
In full: I did this as my Marathon debut in 2008 and came back again to have another go. A fantastic 'runners' race this one - not much crowd support because of the remoteness of much of the route, but lots of cameraderie between runners and it's nice not to have lots of overcrowding off the start. Plus the course and the location are fabulous.

The downhills at the end are really well-positioned I think - it gave me a real psychological boost to get there, but it doesn't half hurt running down them with tired legs! Having said that I'd rather run down them than up them, and for me knowing those descents were approaching made the last 6 miles or so a bit easier mentally.

All in all a great race, and I'll more than likely be back in 2010 to hopefully run it in decent weather!

Thanks to all at Matlock AC.
