In short: Fantastic First Marathon!! In full: First timer in the bringing up the rear, I loved every minute. Support from locals and Macmillan team and the marshalls & volunteers was second to none. I will definitely recommend it. Heat wasn't an a problem (love it) ok missing water at some stations wasn't good but overall the organisation was great and WHAT a finish - fabulous roaring support at the stadium.. I'll be back Date of review: June 5, 2009

In short: Heat and theft made it a toughy! In full: Having only done 2 marathons previously (both in Germany - Berlin + Frankfurt), I wasn't sure what to expect. Edinburgh didn’t disappoint and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this race. In the interest of writing a fair review there were some points that we Brits could learn from the Germans (I know it doesn’t seem fair but it is all I have to go on!); 1. Hydration – I appreciate fully that some lowlife individuals decided it would be good to steal a heap of Carbogels and Water but notwithstanding that it would have been better for there to have been more water stations throughout. (I am told Police are on the look out for a group of Scots with good skin and plenty of energy!). 2. Energy/ food on the move – In my previous marathons there were plenty of banana and dried fruit as well as a whole host of sweet tea(?!) Redbull and energy drinks. I appreciate that this requires a lot of organisation etc but it really would have helped on Sunday. 3. The climate – Now I don’t expect the good people of the marathon organisation team to suddenly become meteorologists however given that the week leading up to the race the weather was forecasting sunny, 22-26 degrees it would have been nice for there to have been some sponge baths to help wash the salt from my eyes. Thank god for the great supporters with their super soakers and a special mention goes to the little girl at the campsite with the hose – THANK YOU! 4. Transport – There were lots of people at the finish line and whilst there was the marathon buses (for the runners) what about the supporters? We bought 2 tickets (which I think were £5 each) for the buses and didn’t use them since we wanted to go back with the guys that came down to cheer us on. We jumped on a regular bus in the town for £1.20 – Which I am told is how much it costs to get anywhere in Edinburgh. Why don’t the organisers agree a fee with First Bus so that marathon runners can return on the buses for free (showing their numbers- and add the £1.20 on the fee), and agree to put more buses on? (what do I know). Despite the 4 points above, I think the marathon was fantastic. It was well organised, well supported and I will be entering next year. The Organisation Team did a good job, like all events of this scale there will always be room for improvement but I can’t fault their efforts.

In short: Great race, shame about the heat In full: This was my first marathon and I am now hooked. Support was amazing from start to finish helping to get through the heat. A great course and one I imagine would be perfect to gain pb's. Date of review: June 5, 2009

In short: A Great race, marred by poor organisation. In full: This was my first marathon and I really enjoyed it. I found the atmosphere and support from both spectators and other runners outstanding.
The organisation seemed reasonable. That said, the water issue was unacceptable, I can’t understand how the race organisers can say they had 10,000 bottles of water left at the finish and blame empty stations on theft – Sounds more like poor planning / distribution to me!

As for the people who were cut short. Do the organisers have any idea how much effort people put into marathon preparation? I hope they are refunded their entrance fees! The only H&S issues were caused by poor planning and were entirely foreseeable / avoidable.
Moaning aside, as I said I personally had a great day and will be back next year!

In short: Good race hot weather In full: According to the Edinburgh marathon official site they had a lot of water/Lucozade stolen. This is not their fault; in difficult circumstances they did a good job. Next year the drinks will have a armed guard. Excellent race, acheived a PB!!! Date of review: June 5, 2009

In short: I didnt really experience any problems and had a great day In full: I fully understand and appreciate everyone elses problems, however my wife (spectator) and i had a wonderful day. I ran a new pb despite the heat and had no real problems with the organisation, yes my number only turned up the day before we travelled, and the reunion area was badly signposted and organised but i thought the finish was awesome, when youve struggled and are in pain the noise from the supporters and the loud music really drag you over the line, and the little glass of beer at the end was heaven. Had the water not been an issue for others I think some of the other complaints would have been seen as minor. All in all i would certainly recommend a weekend in Edinburgh which is a lovely city and if it happens to coincide with the marathon, have a go. Date of review: June 5, 2009
