In short: On a cool day this race coud seriously increase your chances of a personal best. In full: This race was brilliant. The weather was excellent, although it was extremely hot and only got hotter as the race progressed. Nevertheless the marshals provided copious quantities of water and gel bars to ensure that the runners had enough to keep them going, and it was certainly needed. By the halfway point some runners I passed looked to have hit the wall, probably due to the effects of dehydration, so I was glad of all the extra drinks and gels on offer. (I certainly took on more in this event than I normally do, and in that heat I'm glad I did, otherwise I may well have taken even longer to finish.) The event was very well organised - my only regret was that I didn't manage to get a new personal best. Anyway I finished the event, albeit in a slower time than I had hoped for, but despite that little disappointment I really enjoyed doing this race and would seriously consider doing it again. In short: Could be great if transport links improved, they need to use the Racecourse for the finish. In full: A lot of the more negative comments are pretty fair.
However:
The race and route itself is excellent and fast. No where near as dull as I expected. Its not a city centre marathon like London but the loop out along the coast is fast an open and the crowds along the route were incredible and this is a big benefit of a looped course. I like the 2012 medal and the t-shirt is a tech fabric so good to wear to the gym (almost as good as Survival of the Fittest Ts).
Couldn't believe the numbers doing the relay, seemed like 1 in 5 or so, (do the half marathon or the 10 k the day before??) but they didn't annoy me that much.
However, getting into Edinburgh on a Sunday morning is tricky as there were no extra trains put on. So the start has to be at 10:00 which if its hot then you are in for a long day. Great atmosphere at the start but the first few kms were on thin roads so slow. Good organisation with bags and I thought plenty toilets though agree there was room for more.
Finish area was superbly done. BUT you do have to walk miles to get to the buses and you have to PAY FOR YOUR TICKETS even though my driver couldn't care less about them. That said the bus departure are is a large park and ride.
Basically, the organisers need to pony up and use Musselburgh Racecourse for the finish and have the buses leave from here. Date of review: May 29, 2012

In short: This was my first marathon so not an awful lot to compare to but overall it was enjoyable, I ran a good time (2:59:15) and I shall return! Date of review: May 29, 2012

In short: What fantastic local support In full: I pb'd at the race and achieved my goal of sub 3 hours which means I never have to run a marathon again!! hurrah to that. I couldn't beleive the support along the way, the people were fantastic, rigging up hosepipes from their homes to cool us down and cheering and shouting like their lives depended upon it. Really kept me going and I wouldn't have pushed myself on had it not been for the support. Personally, I thought that the oragnisation and atmosphere were great. My only gripe was leaving the medal collection area and really struggling to find the baggage area as a first timer - signage could have been much better. I only say this because I couldn't really walk and was very dazed so somethign mroe obvious would have helped. Date of review: May 29, 2012

In short: Getting better but still not value for money In full: It was my second year doing it and there was definetely improvement from last year but the organisers have a bit more work to do to make it excellent race.
I can't believe some runners are complaining about weather and not being enough shade...not a lot the organisers can do about that one I'm afraid. If we want to keep on complaining about British weather we could go on for hours and hours :D
There was plenty of water this year and I'm always taking my own energy stuff with me so I wasn't really bothered about there not being enough gels etc. I don't trust what they give on the day anyway and prefer to use my own things that I konw will work with my stomach.
There were too few toilets at the start. There is space for more and with the amount of runners they are getting in they should double if not triple the amount of loos at the start. People must have been late to the start line.
The course...it's nice and easy and definetely better second time around when you know what's coming. For people wanting to run in Edinburgh City Centre I'd recommend Rock'n Roll half marathon which I think is run in April. It's more scenic, very hilly and no chance for PB. I personally do prefer running away from the city and the cool breeze from the sea was nice.
I'm planning to do it again next year. Date of review: May 29, 2012

In short: First marathon and that made it special for me! Would definately recommend for 1st timers. Fairly flat route, great crowds, great scenery, loved the hose pipes from, the crowds. I agree with commends about the relay runners flying by when you are dig Date of review: May 29, 2012

In short: Capital Punishment In full: Second and definitely the last time i have done this race unless there are fundamental changes. 1) The start time is too late for the time of year. 2) The relay runners make it confusing and soul destroying 3) The course has ridiculous bits of doubling back and sharp turns it needs a rethink and a country's capital city marathon should end in the city. 4) walking miles to get to your relay bus 5) I got my race number delivered the day before the race after I had arrived for the race necessitating a trip to get a replacement i could have done, without after ten hours travelling 6) The medal is disgusting - The organisers are juggling too many events in one weekend Date of review: May 29, 2012
