In short: Hot & Hilly!! In full: For the size of the event (6000+ runners), the organisation was poor. I've seen better at local running club hosted races. The water situation was a disgrace - especially so for such a hot day. Plastic cups?? where were the sports bottles & Isotonic drinks? Congestion was caused at the water stations, with only one side of the road used. Only one sponge station (mile 3 & on the return, mile 10). And then no water at the finish other than the small bottle in the 'goody' bag - or should that be 'lack of goody' bag? usual bog standard cotton t-shirt. Scenery was poor, mostly through industrial areas. Support was patchy, due I guess to the above. However, Eccleshall (half way point) was brilliant. Fantastic crowd support with some entertainment thrown in. Start / finish at Don Valley good too. Although I think the event is not able to support the number of runners taking part. Traffic congestion severe at the start, despite allowing plenty of time.
For the number of runners taking part, the event should be much slicker organised. Other cities put on so much more for their half marathons. Sheffield can and should do better to make it a top notch race.
First half of the race virtually all on the uphill. Not too steep, but a constant slog upwards. Really can't believe how bad the water situation was - especially considering the hot weather.
In short: Very hot today but that is not the organisers fault.Water in bottles would be better though. In full: Enjoyed this race despite the inclines and hot weather.Medal was nice.Had to queue at some water stations and this is un-acceptable.Bottles next time please. Lack of toilet facilities at start was not great.Ended up using some bushes as a urinal.Again not acceptable.Otherwise organisation was fine. Date of review: May 27, 2012
In short: Hot day good race goody deficient In full: Admittedly a hot day but most drinks stations were too short. Result . Stop. Queue. Only water to drink after the race. A few gallons of squash would have been a good investment. Not usually picky about goody bags but this was poor. Could be so much better as an event Date of review: May 27, 2012
In full: As a Sheffield lass i have started my running with this race. This is my city but i feel we need to catch up and compete with the other half marathons the potential is there please take it and make it better. Water in cups please change to bottles. The support in places is excellent but in other places it needs help. We are a city of music surely we can improve. Marshall's & first aid are excellent. Please take this excellent opportunity and make it first class. Date of review: May 27, 2012
In short: Good atmosphere with good points and bad In full: A good run, quite undulating, but a fairly good route, especially out of the industrial estates. My one gripe would be the water stations, which just had cups, not bottles. Had to stop to drink, and at one station had a cue to get some water. The sponges were a nice gesture though! Also the bag at the end could have done with something edible in it! Date of review: May 27, 2012
In short: City centre & Eccleshall Road great, not enough loos! In full: The stadium start/finish was excellent, and I guess the price you pay is 6 miles in total of slig down industrial roads to/from the city centre. Support lacking until Hilton hotel at 3 miles, and petered out again between centre and Eckeshall road- but the atmosphere there was amazing, best I have ever seen on a city race. No stalls to buy gel bars and last minute stuff, which I had forgotten for once, and definitely needs banks of portaloos. Date of review: May 27, 2012
In short: Very good race... In full: I really enjoyed the race today, and managed a new PB. very good support on course. Stadium atmosfear was fantastic, great grandstand finish. Course was quite challenging, but on the whole, loved the day, and would do it again.. Date of review: May 27, 2012
In short: The heat took its toll, poor support for most of the route, its not flat either !! In full: I have done this one before so I knew there were some hills, but the heat really affected me. The atmosphere at the start at The Don Valley was great, it was a bit tricky getting around the stadium due to lots of barriers, but we parked up easily and arrived with time to spare. The start was delayed due to latecomers which was not good given the heat. The route isn't pretty with a lot of stretches where there isn't much to look at and very little support, it certainly doesn't show the best of Sheffield. The best bit is the run up and back down Eccleshaw Road, with deafening support and .. at last .. a band. For a city with such a rich music history the lack of music around the course is almost criminal. After 10 miles its a horrible slog back to the stadium with only a few souls cheering, but thanks to them for their support. However I dont want everyone telling me I'm nearly done when there are still 3 miles to go.. As usual there were only massive T shirts left (I'm a size 8)but it is unacceptable to run out of goody bags, the organisers know how many runners to expect and there should be enough for everyone, yes even the slow people at the back have worked hard, I have to say that reduced me to tears as I was sore, hot & tired, and no treats to snack on .. thanks I wont be back.
