In short: Mad muddy hailstorm fueled fun time In full: Simultaneously the best and worst event I have had the pleasure of participating in.
As people have said, several different types of mud - slippery uphill sheets, sticky bogs, stinky cesspits mixed with horse poo - some surprising uphill sand traps, tree roots galore, people slipping and sliding in front of you from all angles, and completely opaque spectacles by the time the horizontal hail started drumming into my face and thighs. I'm glad I hadn't shaved for a week as at least that offered some protection.
My first 10km and my first trail race. Though I think that was less trail, more obstacle course. With water cannons. Think Wipe Out. But, boy did I feel satisfied when I finished, below my target time (the one I aimed for before the race, not the generous one I revised to, once I had seen the conditions.
I can't really remember the course as I was focused on the 4-5 metres just in front of me, as obstacles appeared at short notice as people fell / rose / fell again / sidestepped / sashayed / backflipped all around me. That, and the hail. Of course, it was blue sky and sunshine 20 minutes after I finished.
Agree about the long boggy walk to the start - would have been good to know, and a bit of a let down for supporters, especially if they had buggie or small kids.
Would definitely do it again. But would wear tights. And a snorkel.
And yes - thanks Marshalls. Great effort in the conditions. Date of review: November 22, 2009

In short: Muddly hilly course through woods. Lots of obstacles to dodge, tight turns, tree roots. Heavy rain and hail spoiled the finish. Times were slow all round, estimate that it was 2 to 3m slower than normal Date of review: November 22, 2009

In short: Lots of weather... In full: Great race, lots of mud & puddles, bit tougher than we though it would be. Nice to see some hail, thunder & lightening. Not what we expected, but the organisers do the GRIM series as well...
Only downside was queue for mugs & t-shirt. Got very cold very quickly. Medals are quicker to handout. Date of review: November 22, 2009

In short: Would have been great without the hail In full: Mud, wind, hills, rain - all that I expected. The hail was a bit much though. Well organised and fun course. Date of review: November 22, 2009

In short: Challenging trail course In full: The weather wasnt great, but this was a great course. The standing water made picking a path tricky, so I missed most of the scenery, but its a beautiful place to run. A big thanks to the marshalls for turning out, and their encouraging words - when the rain was coming in sideways they kept me going. Any plans to run this again in the summer? Id buy that for a dollar Date of review: November 22, 2009

In short: I normally avoid mud, but enjoyed this race despite the weather. In full: Very good organisation, and the marshalls were fantastic. Standing on a wet common, in the wind and rain, is not enjoyable. I got rather cold in the queue at the end, but the mug and t-shirt are nice. I will certainly be back, and hope for a drier autumn. In short: Lovely run around Wisley Common - despite the weather! In full: A chip-timed, well organised event on a route that keeps you working much of the way around on a lovely course. If the wet conditions leading up to the race did not make it tricky underfoot, the torrential downpour with hail added in for good measure made this really hard going. Despite this, the jolly marshalls did a great job giving encouragement in conditions that would have been equally hard-going for them! Definitely one for the diary in 2010. In short: Nice course with some tough bits In full: The recent rain made the terrain challenging. The sandy bits were very clingy and the muddy bits, very muddy. Towards the end, the rain and hail hurt like hell! My first trail/cross county race and it was a bit of test but would do it again. Date of review: November 22, 2009

In short: Well done those marshalls, not a day to be standing around In full: Considering the numbers involved this went extremely well for a first-time race. The course would have been gorgeous on a brighter, drier day. Not that I mind horizontal rain and free microdermabrasion by hailstones! It would have helped if we had been warned of the long trek between car park and start, and queueing for the mugs at the end was miserably cold. But, those things can be sorted. Overall great fun, and many thanks to the marshalls who stayed cheerful in the pouring rain. Date of review: November 22, 2009
