In short: I did this race last year and came back for more , managed to take 4.5 min off my time and really enjoyed it , good support very friendly and the cup of tea at the end was very welcome Date of review: November 13, 2009
In short: A quick half marathon but with a difficult road section In full: Good race, long time since I did a half marathon, most runners very friendly the only complaint I had was there was no minutes silence before the race as it started at 11am on Remberance Sunday. In short: Enjoyable race, some minor organisational issues. In full: Positives first, a very enjoyable race along a well marshalled and scenic route. Nice medal too. The marshalls were friendly and supportive. The little bit of mud and water made the race far more interesting. It's November in North Lancashire for goodness sake - what kind of weather were people expecting?
Next year, I would suggest starting the race on the track so that runners can organise themselves into places appropriate to where they are likely to finish. Starting with a lap of the track would allow the field to spread before it gets to the narrower tracks where overtaking is more difficult. If you want to address a field of 600+ runners in the open air you will need some kind of decent voice amplification, otherwise most people will not be able to hear you and will not be aware of the one minutes silence. Being a Billy no-mates I had no one to talk to anyway, but I'd have been horrified if I'd unwittingly talked through a rememberance silence. A few signs from the leisure centre car park to the start of the race would have been helpful for those of us who don't know the area. I suspect the receptionist in the leisure centre was a little cheesed off at having to answer the same question so many times.
In short: Mainly flat, mostly off road. That good enough for me! In full: The wet bit was a challenge, but not too bad. Please no more talk of 'shaming' the people who talked through the minutes silence. Last year the race took place on the 11th and the silence was well observed. This year I wasn't expecting it and those of us who like to plod from the back heard no announcement at all. Date of review: November 9, 2009
In short: Great Race - Shame about the flooded paths In full: Was really looking forward to this race - was surprised about the hill around the 9 mile mark as understood it all to be flat, but that was the only one. The water-logged path spoilt it for me - spoilt my chances of a PB and my shoes felt heavy from there on. I too, spoke to the wheelchair couple and they were really uplifting - well done to them both. Great atmosphere, great crowd. Date of review: November 9, 2009
