In short: Very well organised - you got exactly what you signed up for ! In full: The marathon was well marked, nice undulating very runable route - though a lot of tarmac for a trail marathon - great countryside and views - the YEW forest has to be seen - very friendly marshalls from signing on to the finish - a great day out. In short: Ultra-Marathon which rewards the pain with stunning views In full: The Salisbury 5-4-3-2-1 50K Ultra marathon was my first attempt at the ultra distance and I've got to say I loved it! The fact I didnt finish (due to injury) did not detract from some of the finest views England has to offer. The course profile is challenging to say the least but its worth it. The marshalls are excellent (some of whom will be on the course for hours), the water stations are well supplied (although there is a bit of a gap between the 12 Mile and the 16 Mile marker on the ultra route), the event was class and I will be back next year to try and finish the whole thing. In short: Not easy, not at all, but well organised, friendly fellow runners and really beautiful so worth the pain! In full: This was my first ever marathon and I decided to take part on a whim- I run regularly but really only up to 10 miles. Was it a sensible thing to do? No. Do I regret it? Not one bit, despite having to walk the last 6 miles.
The first 13 miles flew- the scenery was incredible, there were plenty of water stations with jelly babies and some very friendly fellow runners who were happy to pass the time of day.
My only slight issue is that as course got harder and you got more tired, so the water stations began to dwindle- I was gasping by the time I got to the checkpoint in the forest and the one at mile 25 would have been welcome far sooner.
In all, it was a fantastic day and I would definitely do it again- with proper training though next time! Oh, and big thanks to Darren who towed me up a hill and provided much encouragement while at the same time looking after his injured companion- such a gent. Date of review: August 10, 2010

In short: Brilliant! In full: my hub and I ran the marathon as a long training run and enjoyed evey minute. Organisation was superb - parking next to start, free showers, lots of loos. the race itself was fairly challenging but very beautiful in parts - especially the Yew wood where you had to follow the string. The cornfield was tough in the heat but it was such a friendly race that we passed the miles chatting to lots of great people. The marshalls on the drinks statins were wonderful as were the other competitors - especially the ones who yelled us back when we took a wrong turn! An excellent race and even more remarkable considering the range of distances availbale. Only downside would be the people of Salisbury....would have been fab to have had a bit more reaction in the sreets near the finish of the race insted of feeling like a nutcase running through a shopping centre!!!
Brilliant day. Date of review: August 10, 2010

In short: some lovely views, nice atmosphere - but too much road and boring last few miles! In full: there are lots and lots of good bits to the marathon - the first 18-ish miles are lovely, great views, not too hilly. Really friendly well-stocked water-stations, reasonable route-marking and good maps. Nice laid-back atmosphere, too. But there were some bad bits - lots of road for a trail marathon, a sudden lack of signage at about 19-20 miles and an interminable, flat, hard-surfaced last few miles that really sapped my will to live! I wonder if there;s any way the distance could be made up earlier, out in the fields/woods, and then the course brought more directly into Salisbury at the end instead of through what felt like miles of village roads and pavements? A good event though, and great value. Tough in the heat! Date of review: August 10, 2010

In short: Excellent organisation. Very welcoming, beautiful scenery, hills challenging especially in the heat, friendly water stations, great medal and a fabulous atmosphere at the end with the band playing.....see you next year! In full: I did the 20k and was a bit nervous after reading that it was easy to get lost (I have no sense of direction). I cannot comment on the other distances but the 20k was very well marked and I had no issues except the realisation at 12.5 miles that I wasn't at the fire station and it was going to be longer than 20k, more like 13.58 miles according to my Garmin! In short: Race HQ and parking v.good. Check your map as signage slightly lacking on 10k (and distance markers!) Difficult job organising 5 distances though, so understandable. Tough course in summer heat Date of review: August 9, 2010

In short: Knocked off 39 minutes compared to last year! In full: Ran the marathon again & was delighted with my time. It helped by running in road shoes.
There were a number of mile markers missing, so please have more next year.
Everything else fab, directions, ample water stations, good route, friendly marshalls, quick results, park at the start/finish. I'll be back! Date of review: August 9, 2010

In short: Too much road for a trail event In full: Moved up to the marathon this year, having done the 30k for the last two. Too much road for a trail event, was wearing trail shoes, and would have been better off in road shoes. No problems navigating the course, well marked, and I particularly enjoyed the section through the Yew Woods. Second loop was not so good, especially section along A36 at Wilton. Plenty on water stations with friendly marshalls. Think I'll probably stick to the 30k on this event in the future. Date of review: August 9, 2010

In short: Another great race - fantastic organisation grats Ludo again!! In full: I have been doing this for a few years and remeber when it was mainly walkers with a handfull of runners. The race has now matured but still retains its freindly personable atmosphere, and where else can you find a great choice of distances and fantastic scenery. Date of review: August 9, 2010
