In short: Good for a first-timer, need some hill training! In full: This was my first marathon, so I was a bit nervous before the start, everyone was very friendly though, even though my runkeeper woman was turned up full and shouting at me every half mile....
The route for the 42K was nice, I need to put in some more hill training for next year though! The signs were excellent, up until the point where we started heading back into Salisbury. The arrows ran out and there was just saucony tape hung from some of the trees, which wasn't easy to see. The last bit through the cathedral grounds was a bit difficult, as we were coming back in at lunchtime, and there were thousands of tourists wandering around aimlessly to avoid....
A nice touch was the food stops - fruit, chocolate, sweets, and amazing bread pudding! Makes a change from energy gels... :)
I'll do this again next year, but I think I'll go for the 50K... Date of review: August 24, 2011
In short: Brilliantly well organised and stacks of food In full: Second time i've run this one and loved it even more this time round as it was a special one for me, it was my 40th marathon completed just before my 40th birthday and I was really happy that I chose this one to achieve that. The route is beautiful with lots of variation, both scenery and the terrain, some fairly challenging hills that were made tougher on Sunday with the heat and masses of water stations on the way round, well stocked with water, squash, sweets, mars bars, fruit and the yummiest bread pudding at my fave checkpoint in the yew trees (where the fairies live). Considering there are 5 races going on at the same time, I think the organisation is superb....yes, it is all over distance, but the info you are given does mention that the measurements are approximate, so it should not be too much of a surprise, especially for a trail race. A few more marshalls would be nice, but as long as you concentrate, it is pretty hard to go wrong or get lost. The finish area has to be mentioned too, firstly are there many races you've ever been to where you can park so close to the start/finish and secondly, it makes a great base at the end to celebrate with my family and friends. Brilliant! and I will be back. Date of review: August 18, 2011
In short: Good 50k route In full: My first Ultra and I was very nervous, but the people were great and the route was good fun with lots of challenges to keep me interested. Only improvement would be less road running and more trail Date of review: August 17, 2011
In short: Great Fun In full: Another great Race put on by the Fire fighters ! My 3rd Time and i think it gets better , i cant believe the fantastic bread pudding has'nt got a mention yet ...! it was worth running the 27 miles just for that ! A big thank you to all the organisers and the people on the many drink and food stations . The haunted wood where the fairy's must live is brilliant . Met some charming runners and had a great day out , see you next year Date of review: August 17, 2011
In short: wrecked by the farmers field In full: This was hard for me the eevnt was good fun but i found the farmers fields the worst bit, long open areas that were rough on the foot but at the same time scienic. the signs were good but almost got lost with the red string in the woods, not good if your colour blind. some of the roads needed marshals and i got on the wrong end of a car horn ( thanks for the comments from the other runners to the car driver- i cant print what they said). Not my first choice for an off road event but will probably be back. All in all fantastic event for charity and a very good cause well done to the organisers good job Date of review: August 16, 2011
In short: A great event, good for spectators with things going on all day. In full: I do this as a training run as i live in the area. I think the organisers should take a big thank you from us all as they do such a good job. My only downside was from some other runners who cut the race short on the 42k and still claimed a finish position, this is not playing the game and is not welcome in our sport. This will not stop me coming back to a really friendly, well organised event that will grow and grow. Thank you again. Date of review: August 16, 2011
In short: Dangerous road crossings, too much tarmac to call it a trail race but nice medal at the end In full: Start of 20K was interesting - no warning! Mile markers were fine to 9 miles - and then nothing. Didn't see any marshals, only drink station operators. 20k was actually over half marathon. Seriously dangerous main road crossings coming back into the city. Personally I feel trying to organise so many different distances was just too much for the organisers. Nice medal though. In short: A well-organised event with beautiful scenery In full: More road than usual for a trail run, makes for a good training run for an autumn road marathon. Lovely start up to Old Sarum, then views across Salisbury to the cathedral as you pass 2 miles. Only negative was the very busy road junctions (cars) to be negotiated at Wilton. The busy town streets were full of August tourists, but I was happy to put up with that for the enjoyable run past the cathedral, and along by the river. We were told distances were approximate, so not surprised to clock 26.8 for the marathon. Date of review: August 15, 2011
