In short: A Bottle neck start (with only 2 lanes from 3 open) In full: After a bottle neck start then course does stretch out (1.5K) it is then good to get a good time and has a frantic last 800M, and its brilliant. Won't spoil the surprise for you.
The waves need to be 10 mins apart instead of 5 as this increased the botle neck. Also last 1k can become a bottle neck if people are slow, maybe have a fast lane might do it.
There are cheaper races (£24) out there but if you want a big day race then its is ok. Date of review: September 6, 2009

In short: Slight change to last years course, missed running under the south stand at hillsborough but nevermind. Its about as flat a course as you can get in a city built on seven hills!! You should see the one on my training route! Date of review: September 6, 2009

In full: I didn't enjoy this run at all. There were no signs when you got off the tram to tell you where to go. Ok, the waves were well organized. It was tight for the first km and you had to run at the pace of others around you. The atmosphere (if you'd go as far as to call it that) was dull. Only a few cheering points that slightly lifted your spirit. It wasnt very scenic. The last 2km is virtually all uphill and the hills are VERY steep! difficult to run from the 200m mark to the finish line. Date of review: September 6, 2009

In full: Plusses - good organisation on the day, good crowd support, reasonable goodie bag, t-shirt seems reasonable quality, very inclusive for participants of all abilities.
Downers - not receiving my pack in the post, very expensive, uninspiring course and the steep downhill at the start and steep uphill for the last kilometre mean this isn't really the flat course its advertised as. Date of review: September 6, 2009

In short: Really enjoyed this.... In full: I didn't do the GYR last year but decided to do this year's on a whim. Really enjoyed it, although I agree that the scenery wasn't exactly stunning! It was quite nice to run along Penistone Road and see people on the other side, and where there was support it was enthusiastic. Will definitely be back next year. Date of review: September 18, 2008
