In short: A great flat, fast course. No major problems on the day In full: As my first ever event I found the course flat and fast and was really pleased with my time. This is an ideal event for beginners and will spur me on to tackle tougher courses during 2011 and beyond. I finished in 1hr 47 mins and didnt find traffic situation too bad, although it could be improved. Date of review: March 14, 2011
In short: I'll do it again In full: The only real issue for me was the cars/parking situation, especially coming towards the finish, but I'm not sure what could be done about that apart from moving to a completely different location that has better access/more space. Although it would indeed help if cars could be prevented from exiting til at least 2 hours after the start. Otherwise this was a fantastic race in terms of PB potential - I beat mine by 6 minutes - and the spits-and-spots of local support were really nice, probably even more than I'd expect given the temperature, the remoteness of the location and that this isn't a high-profile event. In short: Low key and enjoyable In full: Fast flat course if the wind stays off. 3 water stations (one of which you pass twice) so no big gaps between water. Also water available at the finish. The pedestrians/cars/mountain bikes mix at the end was a bit of a pain, but if you have enough left to sprint the home straight you haven't raced hard enough, right?
Marshalling was friendly, and occasionally very encouraging. With a rural route such as this I don't expect a lot of support from spectators.
Low key rather than cheap would be my description. Many thanks to Martin and his team. I'll be back next year. Date of review: March 14, 2011
In short: Ban cars from the road, fill in the pot holes, but apart from that In full: Forget the start and the finish and I really enjoyed this event. Flat course, great scenery and set a PB. Support is sporadic so it can a bit lonely out there and if windy it could be very tough. But it was quiet, idyllic and fast - until you reach the end.
The organisation was hit and miss. There should be no parking on the road at all (proved a nightmare) and no cars should be allowed to leave the HQ for at least two hours after the start. Trying to sprint finish is very difficult when you have to avoid cars maneuvering as well as the ankle-breaking pot holes.
Not a fan of the sharp turn at the end and running through the car park with people milling around and almost crossing your path as they go to the toilets.
Start and end - could do better. Middle - perfect.
In short: Flat, monotonous scenery rather than inspiring. Functional race rather than enjoyable. In full: As said by others, the end of the race is an anticlimax. You have to dodge through moving & parked cars & other runners who have finished. Its a shame that nothing in the town of Lydd is open as spectators have little to do during the bulk of the race. This race does the job for a pre marathon race & unfortunately I don't think it does much more. Date of review: March 14, 2011
In short: Nice race, flat as a pancake and good for a Personal Best In full: This is the second time I have ran this race and understand there was much criticism last year - though was fine for me. Loved it again this year, most of the route traffic free which is good. Loved being able to see the inflatable finish at mile 12, marshalling was fine again this year and it was lovely to see so many young children helping with the water stations and the medals. Water stations didnt run out this year and I thought there were enough of them and water at the finish as well. I love this race as it is flat and a good PB for me at 1:50. Glad Martin had decided to continue with this race again this year - well done!! Date of review: March 14, 2011
In short: Fast & Flat In full: Overall a good race, nice course, very flat, 3 water stations, most marshals were friendly & supportive.
If you want to find out how fast you can do a half marathon then this is a great race, very flat course and wide enough for the smallish field of runners that you can overtake other easily if you wanted to. The only slow part is doing a u-turn and about 5 and a half miles.
My only two complaints would be no course map on the website, but there was a link to 'fletch' to get one, and the road to the cricket club (start) was a nightmare, either need to ban parking in make one way. Date of review: March 14, 2011
