In short: Good race In full: I did like this race - the weather and course were just right. One problem was that the race seemed to start 1 or 2 minutes before 10am - this was frustrating as I was just doing last minute preparations when I realised the race had actually started. I really don't like to be stopped suddenly at the end of a race (especially as I usually sprint the last mile or so)- I didnt like the fact that I was stopped suddenly to give the chip after the race - dangerous for some competitors perhaps? There seemed to be abit of a problem with parking/congestion before and after, but it didnt really bother me. This is something I would do again - bigger races with more competitors are much more exciting. Date of review: June 10, 2007
In short: Flat(ish) fast course. Very well mashalled and great finish on track In full: The course is farily flat with 2 minor hills. One of these is a 800m drag up before in the last mile. About 2 miles are along a gravel path that is fairly good condition but is not super quick. The rest of the course if fast with no major turns or problems. Literally hundreds of great marshals and police controlling the traffic. Wish more races were like this. Plenty of water and sponges. The onlyu issues was the heat and humidity but that what you expect in June so may be it is race for place more than pb. If this was an April race then it would be very fast. In short: Flat - Hurray! In full: A nice flat race, and who knew there was so much nice scenery around Southend? The organisers are obviously a bit wary after the amount of people who were ill last year (you will be reminded constantly to drink water)but well marshalled. Handy hint - park round the corner to avoid the car park and nip to the loo in McDonalds, much easier Date of review: June 10, 2007
In short: Fast flat course in near perfect conditions, worth doing for a serious chance of doing a PB In full: Flat course with 2 or 3 long easy climbs. Some charming countryside and a near olympic welcome at the finish line made this a special day. Well done on organising a great race- i will just need to leave earlier next year because the traffic was a nightmare approaching the venue.
Only compaint was there was a big timer clock at the top of the last hill so from a distance this looked like the finish line which was actually 250m further on... My sprint finish left me knackered entering the stadium and the supporters really had to shout and scream that extra bit louder to help me drag my sorry backside across the line. Still set a pb so musn't grumble too much. see you all next year! Date of review: June 10, 2007
In short: Good fairly flat apart from a few hills. Start organisation could be better In full: water stations not very good as cups rather than bottles hard to drink from. very hot but wet sponges were fantastic Date of review: June 10, 2007
In short: Great organisation and chip timing, Loads of water stations which was excellent although would have preffered bottles not cups(one did give bottles which worked). Dissapointing no free t-shirt or post race snack which I would have paid more for. Date of review: June 10, 2007
In short: Well organised and well marshalled. Got a pb, but then it was my first half marathon! In full: Start wasn't very smooth as people didn't want to listen to the briefing. Once underway, it was well organised and marshalled, with lots of water and sponges. A bit uphill over the last mile which hurt, but finish very well organised. A long time to get out of the car park, but with 1300+ entrants, you have to expect this. A tip for next year - use the tennis centre loos rather than the portaloos, immaculate and no queues.
