In short: Far tougher than I had expected. The long gradual haul at aound 12 miles, although npt steep, was unexpected and hurt.. I will pay more attention to the contour map next time. In full: Could do with bottled water, as they do at the Stevenage HM. Spilt most of mine. Good job it wasn't a hot day.
Still mamanged a PB, totally remarkable on a course like that. The road was so muddy for the second half that it felt more like a x/c. My new trainers are ruined! Date of review: February 7, 2005
In short: Great course-great all-round half. In full: First time I've run it.I particularly enjoyed the excellent organisation(e.g. 2 separate starts, great marshalling, isotonic drinks at the end)and the testing, varied course-the hills make it much more of a challenge.Unless you're new to racing,I would forget about PB's,but they can come later.I agree that the final water station was too soon after the 2nd,and the final 2-3 (flat)miles seemed rather an anti-climax.Overall,my first impressions were of an excellent half-marathon-very well organised, great course, friendly atmosphere and depth throughout the field.Recommended. In short: Surprisingly scenic In full: Surprisingly scenic with three or four climbs to test the legs, although there is pb potential if, like me, you're a rapidly improving beginner/intermediate (took three minutes off my pb). One small gripe would be the random dishing out of t-shirts to runners and non-runners alike at the end. The t-shirts are in place of medals and should be for finishing runners only! In short: Well organised, good marshalls ..... not as hilly as I'd heard! In full: Good half, not as hilly as I'd read ... & bit odd about the 3rd water station being so early .. but then again they did throw in a sponge station half a mile before it. (sponges make the water taste disgusting!!!!!)
There didnt seem to be too much bottle necking (there was a bit but I never slowed too much). Narrow lanes meant you had to be a bit agile to overtake sometimes .. but generally a great day out. Date of review: February 6, 2005
In short: My first half. Really enjoyed the challenge of the hills. In full: Only small complaint was the third water station being a bit too early. Everyone I spoke to agreed with this. It would have been better at 11 or 12 miles rather than 9. Apart from that, excellent. Date of review: February 6, 2005
