In short: Hot, hilly, hellish (in parts) but makes you feel heroic In full: Really looked forward to the 21k race and it didn't disappoint. The route through the Clarendon Park and Longford Castle (usually closed to the public) are stunning.
It is a very tough run, with three very tough hills/climbs. Was absolutely exhausted by the end of it but very proud to have completed it too.
The 21k was in fact measured at 23k but the organisers jokingly announced that this might be the case at the start of the race and asked competitors to check their GPSs when they'd finished and let them know! A great way of diffusing and making light of what might have annoyed some runners.
Well marshalled with friendly staff, on the whole good signage, well placed drinks stops, particularly the one 3 miles from home offering fruit as well as water.
Three and half hours after finishing and still shattered! Despite that, still tempted to run it again next.

In short: Good for a first-timer, need some hill training! In full: This was my first marathon, so I was a bit nervous before the start, everyone was very friendly though, even though my runkeeper woman was turned up full and shouting at me every half mile....
The route for the 42K was nice, I need to put in some more hill training for next year though! The signs were excellent, up until the point where we started heading back into Salisbury. The arrows ran out and there was just saucony tape hung from some of the trees, which wasn't easy to see. The last bit through the cathedral grounds was a bit difficult, as we were coming back in at lunchtime, and there were thousands of tourists wandering around aimlessly to avoid....
A nice touch was the food stops - fruit, chocolate, sweets, and amazing bread pudding! Makes a change from energy gels... :)
I'll do this again next year, but I think I'll go for the 50K... Date of review: August 24, 2011
In short: Brilliantly well organised and stacks of food In full: Second time i've run this one and loved it even more this time round as it was a special one for me, it was my 40th marathon completed just before my 40th birthday and I was really happy that I chose this one to achieve that. The route is beautiful with lots of variation, both scenery and the terrain, some fairly challenging hills that were made tougher on Sunday with the heat and masses of water stations on the way round, well stocked with water, squash, sweets, mars bars, fruit and the yummiest bread pudding at my fave checkpoint in the yew trees (where the fairies live). Considering there are 5 races going on at the same time, I think the organisation is superb....yes, it is all over distance, but the info you are given does mention that the measurements are approximate, so it should not be too much of a surprise, especially for a trail race. A few more marshalls would be nice, but as long as you concentrate, it is pretty hard to go wrong or get lost. The finish area has to be mentioned too, firstly are there many races you've ever been to where you can park so close to the start/finish and secondly, it makes a great base at the end to celebrate with my family and friends.
