In short: Second year of running this fantastic race. Possibly not the best race to start back with having had my second baby 4 months ago, I had forgotten about all the hills!, but great sense of achievement. Really well organised and lovely atmosphere. Date of review: November 5, 2008

In short: Demading but thoroughly enjoyable cross country half marathon In full: I ran this for the first time in 2008, following excellent reviews.
You start in the grounds of a pretty old private school in the depths of Surrey (good parking, toilets and showers).
The atmosphere is very friendly with about 250 people taking part.
The run starts slowly by winding up through the school, up through a narrow path between fields and over a few sytes. You then enter a mixture of pretty woodland and wide open country tracks.
The course is cleverly designed so you pretty much run the same course twice but in opposite directions.
The course is dominated by long, fairly tough ascents and then sharp downhills, which makes it a real challenge, all the work you do on the ascents is not rewarded !
The run culminates in the ascent of the summit of Holmbury Hill (one of the highest points in South East England).
People talk of adding 15% to your normal time, I would argue it is close to 20%, so a really good workout.
You are applauded through the finish line and there was a nice atmosphere at the end and a real joint sense of achievement.

In short: Not a walk in the park.......more a tough run in the woods! In full: Charming venue. Friendly folks. When the starter says you will be shot if you drop out, then you know you are in for a special race! Tough course but what a great off road half. The views are superb, the marshalls so positive, the water stations so welcoming and the overall organisation brilliant. Mind you my glutes felt like someone had used them for a punchbag, and today my quads are somewhat challenged. Well done everyone, I had an enjoyable day. I for one will be back next year. In short: Brilliant organisation makes a tough course manageable In full: You do get fair warning about how hard this race is, so I can't even complain about the hills. The marshalling, organisation, markings and signposting - the most detailed and specific I've ever seen - were absolutely spot on, with all the marshalls and drinks station staff very friendly and encouraging too. I really did need that encouragement for the mile long hill up to mile 12. The course was lovely, I wish I could have stopped for the stunning viewpoint at the summit - maybe I'll go back when I'm not running! Date of review: July 21, 2008
