In short: Unbelievably tough - but equally rewarding In full: Orders of magnitude more challenging than any other race I have done - gradient playback on my Garmin quite horrifying afterwards. But what a sense of achievement afterwards! Fabulous cameraderie from the other runners and generous support to all from their friends-and-relations and the official helpers. In short: Enjoyed it from the start to the finish. One for my race calendar. In full: Great support from the marshalls and public along the way. I particularly liked the way the marshalls personalised their encouragement (they matched runners numbers against names on the entry list). I knew it would be hilly but was still surprised by the steepness of some of them. The weather was perfect - guess it would have been a real struggle in the wind and rain that had been forecast. Thanks very much to the organisers and helpers. Date of review: June 14, 2007

In short: Could be the race of the year In full: This is the second time I have ran this race. 2006 was hot and for various reasons I wasn't as prepared for this race as well as I should have been - but I was this year.
Here is my take on the various distinguishing points about this race.
Hills. Its Dartmoor and so there are hills!! The route descends into Asburton before climbing back up to the centre of Dartmoor, and there are descents (and therefore ascents) on the way to little villages nestled in the valleys. If you dont like hills dont do this race! However, they do add to the challenge, and seemed to be a bit easier this time!
Scenery. You will find it harder to beat the views. There are moorland views, tors, valleys woods and villages. This year there was mist clouding some of the tors that just added to the atmosphere.
Atmosphere. The support is amazing. Some runners have support teams and after the first 10 miles you start recognising them all and waving each time you pass them. There are other people on bikes offering drinks and snacks, now thats something you dont get in the FLM!!
Challenge. its only 6 miles more than a marathon, but as most finishers would say it takes about half again as long, and is at least half again as hard! Enter this race and you wont regret it.
Bad points. If anyone can think of any please let me know. Date of review: June 5, 2007

In short: excellent introduction to ultra In full: my first attempt at more than 26.2 miles, and what a glorious day it was. Perfect weather, fantastic scenery, and really good support and conversation from all the other runners. Well done to the marshals and organisers for making this such a memorable and fantastic event. Dartmoor is beautiful. Date of review: June 4, 2007
