In short: Common or garden race In full: Well organised race if nothing exceptional. It is all uphill for first few miles but it is a steady rather than steep incline. Sections along main roads not much fun with traffic bombing by. For some reason it's always freeeezing at the start of this race. I wouldn't travel any distance to do it if it wasn't for a mate who lives by the course and provides a slap-up breakfast after. Yes the mileage markers are confusing, I assume race must actually be less than 8 miles. Walk back to parking is actually a nice country path warm-down if you jog it. I don't think this race can be much fun for beginners & tail-enders as they have to dodge around the early finishers exiting Losely House. Date of review: January 5, 2009

In short: As the name suggests it`s not flat In full: 1st time at the Hog`s back 8. A gently start before tackling the hills! Nice winter views at the top & the way down..if the fog & mist lifted :) Would have liked to see some distance markers & do not park here signs towards the finish. Didn`t mind the walk back. Good race - well done to the organisers & special mention to the marshals & `baggage` ladies. Thanks Date of review: December 21, 2008

In short: A good turnout considering the weather In full: My second attempt and a 2 minute improvement on 2007. A mixed bag of runners organised very well at start and finish.
The only criticsm I picked up was of vehicles blocking the road towards the end of the race just outside the grounds of Loosley House. I thought this was very bad form by the drivers who were obviously lazy and didn't care about some of the runners who were yet to finish. I appreciate there is little the organisers could do, well done. Date of review: December 15, 2008

In short: More hills than I thought with little flat running until mile 5 In full: Good race, car at the start was a bit strange as nobody stopped her pulling into the start. Could do with more people handed out water at the mid point station, only one handing out and one filling hte cups, I skipped it as too many people waiting for water. My Garmin made the race 7.84 which was a surprise but may be due to the hills? Could be a bit disheartening for runners towards the back as on the way to cars we all walk passed them in the opposie direction. Overall a good race with the final 1.25 mile on the drive being good. In short: BRrrrrrr!!! Wish I had worn my gloves.... In full: Another cold morning, but then I guess we should be used to it now in Britain. At least it wasn't raining..... Kept on waiting for the so called big climb & it never really seemed to come?? As many others say the distance markers were very confusing. You pass one that says one mile to go. Then 500 yds later one that says 7 miles.... If it was supposed to be 8 miles how does that work?? The run into Loseley house could of perphaps done with markers telling you how many meters to go this way those of us who have a sprint finish in us would be a bit better warned. A few minor adjustments could have a huge impact on the success of this race. But thank you anyway to the organisers and the speedy availibilty of provisional results. In short: Poorly organised race with a rubbish medal and a long walk back to the car In full: The 49th Hogs Back race completed my first year of racing, and it was by a huge margin the worst race I've run. The car park was quite a way from the start, there were nowhere near enough toilets at the start, and we nearly missed the start as a result. One of the roads, although marshalled, seemed dangerous, with big lorries trying to pass runners on a narrow main road. The mile markers were awful. Not only were they not prominent, but they just didn't seem accurate at all. The official distance states "just over 8 miles", but it seems like it was slightly less than 8, given that the "1 mile to go" marker was before the "7 miles gone" marker. The medal at the end was the worst I have received, and then there's a mile walk back to the car park at the end of the race, and this walk is along the end of the course, so you are hindering other finishers. The only positive I can give this race is that the Hog's Back itself is a great challenge to run up, it is a pretty stern hill. I won't be back. Date of review: December 15, 2008

In short: Average race, same old crappy medal at the finish In full: Each year, this race looks a little more tired than the last. Same course, same start, same finish, same mile markers in the wrong places, Still no accurate measurements. No PA at the finish this year. No goody bag, just water at the finish, Can't be bothered even to put the date on the cheap medal. Maybe this is just a fund-raiser for GGAC? Date of review: December 15, 2008
