In short: Nice race, but failed to learn the lessons from previous years In full: This was my first race 10 years ago, and I've run it maybe 6 or 7 times. It is a lovely route, off road with gorgeous scenery and a friendly atmosphere.
Some improvements have been made over the years for sure. I like the funnel start which was much longer than previous years and also marshalled - much better to get yourself into the right place. Also there was good support (mainly by the copper horse and finish) and also the marshals were plentiful. Technical Tee although additional cost was great. Parking issues were so much better and people were getting out nice and quick. Also the website is much better with an excellent FAQ section. All good stuff.
So after 10 years I've reluctantly decided not enter this race again. I hope my comments below do not read too negative; this feedback is shared in the hope that things can be improved in future races.
Despite every year people calling for the start time to be shifted forward from 1pm to a more sensible time, the organisers stick to this later start time. I bet the 2015 race will be at 1pm too. This means this race takes up your whole day, and you can't eat lunch before the race. Once again it was far too hot for a race to be held in this time of the day. The sight of so many runners being laid out and being attended by St. Johns was a very unpleasant sight. I fear it will take a fatality for the organisers to sit up and take notice and I'm sure nobody wants that.
Once again, silly cups of water were given out at water stations. These are near impossible to drink properly whilst running and also limits you to how much you can actually get down you. The emphasis seemed to be on minimising the clear-up for the organisers rather than keeping runners properly hydrated! In previous years they handed out Lucozade bottles at mile 10 so I don't get the argument about water bottles littering up the place.
At the end to be given one small bottle of water (and denied a second bottle!) and a Mars bar I felt was not adequate given the heat of the day. The queue for the water tap was very long, I didn't want to spend ages just for a top up and wanted to get off my feet.
Could the organisers consider some marshalling of the toilets as they do in other races? The queues were just way too long; given you only have 10 minutes to get started after the gun goes off this could be managed a bit better.
I really hope these issues sorted out and runners safety is put first.
In short: Well organised race in very scienic area but could have been better In full: Windsor half marathon : it was a beautiful bright day to run a very well organised run in a very scenic surrounding . Run starts from "long walk " which is around 1.5 miles from windsor and eton rail station . There is a big car park just next to the start point and most of spaces were empty means many more car could have been accommodated if runners come in car .
Good : -Fennel start so runners had to start at position of their predictive time . - very good support throughout out the route - very scenic route , some part of the route was throughout private area which is normally not open to public . - last mile is on downhill ( first mile is up hill ) and fantastic cheering and support from spectators.
Need Improvement: - why 1pm start ? It waste whole day ? - could not they afford to put goodies in a bag after charging 30 gbp ? Mars bar , water ( only one small bottle )and medal were given in hand . -no information was send with the chip and runner number . Information was available on their website site though . -need to increase number of toilets at start point - only tap water , at the start - water in cup ; difficult to drink unless stop . - NO energy drink throughout route , it could have been better if alteast one station had some energy drink . - Date of review: October 1, 2014
In short: Hilly but lovely In full: Warm day made it tougher than usual, but can't fault the scenery or organisation. Water in cups always a bit annoying but volunteers cheery and supportive. 1pm start means takes up all day, early morning would be preferred. Nice medal & easy parking. In short: Very hilly, don't expect a PB. 1pm start can mean a warm race too. In full: Only cups on the course mean drinking can be difficult especially in warm conditions.
I saw four people flat out on their backs being treated by St John's Ambulance this year. It's a tough course that needs to be treated with respect.
But great scenery and a good one if you want a bit of a challenge. It was my first HM in 2013, I wouldn't suggest anyone else do it as their first HM as it's very hilly! Date of review: September 29, 2014
In short: Worse half marathon! In full: 1pm start- why? I know it wasn't the usual autumns day but the organisers should have sorted the day better we all new it was going to be a hot day at least 7 days ago! The water cups were a dirty and the water tasted of chlorine?! You needed small bottles so we could run with them! Someone should have organised jelly babies or Lucozade stops, we were sweating so much we needed something more! I had never seen so many people collapsed in a race, not even in a marathon. But hey you had time to organise a bouncy castle.. Date of review: September 29, 2014
In short: Late start on a very hot day In full: A very hot day combined with a 13:00 start time made this a very tough race. I didn't like the plastic cups at the water stations. In the conditions bottled water would have been much better. A lot of runners were suffering in the last few miles. The St Johns Ambulance were kept very busy. i hope everyone was ok. Nice medal. Needed more than a small bottle of water and a mars bar at the finish. Credit to the Army Cadets and Scouts who marshalled the race. Date of review: September 29, 2014
In short: Scenic run that would be better with a 10am start In full: First time entering the Windsor Half. Organisation is slick for a big production race. 1pm start time on such a warm day was cruel. The water stations were fine through probably too few in number for such a hot day.
Support for the last two miles is excellent with plenty of encouragement.
The finish was a disappointment. Mars bar, medal and bottle of water. Opportunity knocks for a sports drink sponsor!
Glad to have done it as a warm up to the Royal Parks Half but not one I would rsh back to. Date of review: September 28, 2014
In short: Too hot for the start time In full: They really need to think about the start time, or insistent about keeping 1pm hold it either in August or Oct/Nov to ensure colder weather. I have never seen so many people walking (myself included) on a half before. The heat definitely got to me as I was a whole 14 mins slower than three weeks ago. It would be nice to get more than a small bottle of water, Mars bar and medal at the finish. That said, the kids enjoy the face-painting and balloons whilst I'm 'running'. As I'm a local, will more than likely do it all again next (and complain about the start time) Date of review: September 28, 2014
In short: Wrong start time, as usual In full: Another very warm day for the WHM showed yet again why this race should start in the morning. I hope no one was seriously ill or injured but I saw more runners collapsed and needing treatment than in any previous year. This could be a great race if it had a 10am start time but the organisers have always ignored requests to change the start will no doubt continue to do so.
All the same small problems continue - no water bottles, only plastic cups, no bananas for runners at the end, no energy drinks. Just a medal and a Mars bar for your £28. But these are minor issues. The setting is wonderful and the course a real challenge in warm conditions. Shame the organisers continue to be so blind to runners' safety. Date of review: September 28, 2014
