In short: Scenic, poor organisation and could do with improvements. In full: Nice course, good atmosphere and many thanks to all the marshals for their support on such a freezing morning. However, the race was expensive for the goody bag and the facilities provided. Six toilets in total was a joke. £1.50 for a cup of tea as well as £1 to leave your bag, especially when the parking was a good walk from the start so we had no choice but to pay. The parking was very muddy, we had to get help to get our car out & helped other drivers with theirs. We have done many other races where the parking issue was addressed in similar weather with no problems. Date of review: December 5, 2008
In short: A fun small time set up. In full: I would like to have seen more instruction. There was a very half hearted warm up at the start. In such appalling weather conditions, I would have thought it all the more crucial to have someone taking charge and getting everyone warmed up and in the mood for a really fun run. Like mince pies and hot chocolate but at the beginning. Loved the idea of the antlers, but the cardboard just collapsed in all that rain. Maybe some plastic ones next year. I would have liked to have received more regular markers or informants letting us know how far we've gone/got to go. And the goodie bags....shockingly poor and definitely needed an energy bar in there. Everyone has an MP3 player already, so why not invest more in the on the day set up and less on the post race gizmo, that people will forget to relate to the event and probably end up in the bin unless it's REALLY good. In short: Good beginners race. In full: This was my first organised run so obviously I haven't got anything to compare it with, but it was very enjoyable overall. Good turn out for what was a freezing cold morning. I could complain about the parking, the course being a bit icy in places and the goody bags.....but I won't,just as long as these minor issues are ironed out next year. Be prepared for a tough (for a novice anyway) little incline just after 3 and 8k. Good support from spectators as well. Date of review: December 1, 2008
In short: Not great. In full: I might do this race again as there aren't too many to choose from at this time of year. But several things really do need o improve for next year.
The "goody bags" were laughable. Witness the marshals giving out as many bags as anyone wanted after the race. Each bag contained a biro and some advertising leaflets. It's a waste of time and quite honestly a little humiliating to give out such rubbish as if it's a treat. How much would it have cost extra to have given participants a small memento or medal and an energy bar?
The hot chocolate and the mince pies at the end were a nice touch, but queuing for 20 minutes in the freezing cold to receive them was not.
The 5k race which started after the 10k had finished had the air of a second class race about it. The timing clock wasn't reset so runners had no idea about their 5k time, the start was jumbled.
Marshalling was generally good; most of the volunteers remained cheery and supportive despite the freezing temperatures. Worryingly though, they did allow cars to drive down the main straight which was used four times on the 10k race and twice on the 5k race. I had to swerve round one car to get to the finish line, which the marshals had allowed through right at one of the busiest finishing times of the 10k. Dangerous? Probably.
The track was very icy in parts, coupled with some quite tight corners made going hazardous at times.
Car parking was on a field nearby. Many cars got bogged down after the race and had to be towed out by a tractor. Take a 4x4 next year if you plan to drive.
In short: An excellent race, lovely scenery and great atmosphere...if a touch icy! In full: A freezing cold morning, literally, gave way to a lovely two lap 10k. Beautiful scenery and a good atmosphere. The drinks were the coldest ever and was a bit slippery underfoot but overall I had a great time! Well done all. Poor goody bags however. In short: Glorious Location In full: Great Location and fantastic day to run a 10k. Good closed roads, a bit narrow at times and quite hectic at the start. Enjoyed the figure of 8 course as it meant there was plenty of opportunity for supporters to cheer me on! Goody bag was sparse but the bag itself was a good touch, useful for my kids as a PE bag at school. No medal! CAn we have one next year please? Loved the antlers and mine actually stayed on for the duration. Well done to the organisers and cadet marshalls who gave up their Sunday lie in to stand in the freezing cold and keep us on the straight and narow! A great cause, hope you raised a good amount of cash. Date of review: November 30, 2008
In short: Christmas Cheer In full: Enjoyed the race the two lap course was enjoyable and made for some nice views of Lord Derby's estate. Thanks to all the Marshalls who stood round in the cold weather and managed to smile. The goody bag could do with some work for next year but the antlers were a good touch however maybe not cardboard next year overall 8 out of 10 well worth it. Date of review: November 30, 2008
In short: Not much for your money In full: I know its a charity race but the organisers claim that your race money only paid for the organisation of the event, in that case for my £14 it was very poor value.
A cardboard set of antlers to run in and a goody bag that consisted of leaflets and a pen advertising a machine hire company. I've paid less and got a lot more at every other race I have ever done.
The race itself was fairly flat so there is some PB potential, however the organisation wasn't massively well done at the start. The people near the front had to be told by the people at the back we had started. It was a two lap 10k, in a figure 8 (you passed the start 4 times) and quite nice scenery starting and finishing at the house.
Mince Pie and Hot Chocolate provided at the end.
If the money all went on the event and not to the RNLI it really is hard to see where all the money has gone. Since it was a 10k where a lot of the competitors will only run this race, a medal could have been given out.
