In short: PB every time in the beautiful Peak District In full: I firmly believe that there are fairies and magical creatures all along the Tissington Trail Half Marathon that have helped me to achieve a PB every year I do it, in beautiful autumnal weather served up in beautiful countryside. This is a frill-free event with fantastic organisation and awesome jaffa cakes! I only have one teeny weeny gripe - and that's about groups of runners insisting on running side by side on what at times can be a narrow path. But even that pales in comparison to how uplifting it feels after covering 13.1 miles in glorious countryside. A perfect first half for anyone wanting to try the distance for the first time too. Already in again for the fourth year on the trot. Date of review: October 10, 2016
In short: Beautiful course, cracking medal! In full: A glorious flat-downhill course, great for speed, lovely scenery. Some of the path can be a bit narrow, so try and position yourself appropriately at the start. Could have done with a few more portaloos, but the race didn't start until everyone was ready, just showing how much of a runner friendly race it was. I would definitely recommend it, but be quick, it sells out fast! Date of review: October 10, 2016
In short: 13.1 miles of beauty and the scenery made the race go quickly. Loved it! In full: This was my first Tissington half marathon and won't be my last. The whole experience from start to finish was excellent and the views were to die for. It made running fun and enjoyable and the time seemed to go quicker that I thought. Had a cracking weekend. In short: THIS LITTLE GEM CERTAINLY DOESN'T TAKE THE TISS.... In full: THIS is a fantastic race. I loved it when I first ran it two years ago - and loved it just as much this time around. The sun shone on the glorious Peaks countryside and the huge skies above us stayed azure blue. The trail is a bit lumpy bumpy at times but apart from the odd section it's either pretty flat or downhill. Great news if you're chasing a PB or just an excellent flat track after years of battling up and down hills! The marshals were superb, the spectators enthusiastic and we were well looked after from start to finish. My daughter Hollie was 3rd lady home in a stunning 1:28 and her fiance Rae and my wife Loraine were there to cheer us on..... So a magnificent day was had by all!!! Date of review: October 10, 2016
In short: A glorious sunshine day in the dales on a very flat course! In full: Running along this disused railway line allows you to run through the rolling hills of the Derbyshire Dales while still keeping to a pretty flat route.
While the website advertises this as being "all gradually downhill" it is definitely not the case. There are sections (2-4 miles and 7-9 miles spring to mind) where it is gradually uphill. Obviously not steep, but something to be aware of... but overall, you can definitely regard this as being flat. Not the flattest, I think Blackpool, Edinburgh, Warwickshire and others are flatter - but a PB is definitely on the cards! I'm newish to running and this is only my second half over the past couple years as I've been enjoying doing longer distances - but I managed to take over 3 minutes off my PB and did a 1:22:15, so was very pleased!
Along the route there are just other people using the trail and at times you will have to get out the way of bikes etc or dogs who are pleased to see... but as there's only around 400 people in each race - and most of those being club runners it seems (there were coach loads of clubs runners being dropped off it seemed) - there was little to no support... so it did feel like a training run... but who cares with the glorious countryside??
At £30, it is a little steep, especially as there is no T-shirt included (optional extra), but the organisation made up for this!
Overall, as I got a PB, I would, of course, so this was excellent - but it was a friendly atmos amongst the runners... and with it being mostly club runners - if you want to get a PB by running with quicker people, this is the one for you!
