In short: Demading but thoroughly enjoyable cross country half marathon
In full: I ran this for the first time in 2008, following excellent reviews.

You start in the grounds of a pretty old private school in the depths of Surrey
(good parking, toilets and showers).

The atmosphere is very friendly with about 250 people taking part.

The run starts slowly by winding up through the school, up through a narrow
path between fields and over a few sytes. You then enter a mixture of pretty
woodland and wide open country tracks.

The course is cleverly designed so you pretty much run the same course twice
but in opposite directions.

The course is dominated by long, fairly tough ascents and then sharp downhills,
which makes it a real challenge, all the work you do on the ascents is not
rewarded !

The run culminates in the ascent of the summit of Holmbury Hill (one of the
highest points in South East England).

People talk of adding 15% to your normal time, I would argue it is close to
20%, so a really good workout.

You are applauded through the finish line and there was a nice atmosphere at
the end and a real joint sense of achievement.

In short: This was so tough .. great scenery and superb marshalling though makes it worth while
In full: On the website it does say hilly, but that doesn't do it justice. The toughest race I've ever done, there didn't seem to be anything flat or even undulating woudlhave been nice. The marshalls and water stations were excellent and very supportive It was really good that the leaders passed you going the opposite way so you weren't lapped and could applaud them on. A great race, one that any who enjoys trails should do. The facilties at the start were excellent even if the showers were a tad cold by the time we finished!

In full: Two days later I'm still a bit sore but definately worth it, they don't call it the slog for nothing, the weather was cooler than I hoped which helped lots. A ig thank you must go to all the people who help out especially the guys and girls at the drink stations who have to pick up all the cups!! Thanks for the stile the second time around!!

In short: Great course, good organisation, fantastic marshals
In full: Very well organised event with a scenic and challenging course with plenty of water available. Marshals were absolutely fantastic with their help, support and encouragement. Only negative was the congestion near the start but as its not a course for setting fast times that's not really an issue. Will definitely be back next year.

In short: Top race, shame about the hills!
In full: A very well organised event, with some of the best marshalling I have seen. A real tough course but rivalled by a real great feeling of achievement when you cross the finish line. Certainly not a PB course, but thats clear from the description of the race. Wonderful scenery and will be back next year.

In short: Tough but enjoyable
In full: Really enjoyed this run. Superb setting at the school and great course. Very well marked and marshalled considering the complexity of the course. Very friendly. Good start time considering the heat but plenty of shade on route. How about a few prizes next year?
