In short: Great fun challenging race. Long, gentle-to-steep ascents followed by sharp rocky descents a In full: I ran this for the first time in 2008, following excellent reviews.
You start in the grounds of a pretty old private school in the depths of Surrey (good parking, toilets and showers).
The atmosphere is very friendly with about 250 people taking part.
The run starts slowly by winding up through the school, up through a narrow path between fields and over a few sytes. You then enter a mixture of pretty woodland and wide open country tracks.
The course is cleverly designed so you pretty much run the same course twice but in opposite directions.
The course is dominated by long, fairly tough ascents and then sharp downhills, which makes it a real challenge, all the work you do on the ascents is not rewarded !
The run culminates in the ascent of the summit of Holmbury Hill (one of the highest points in South East England).
People talk of adding 15% to your normal time, I would argue it is close to 20%, so a really good workout.
You are applauded through the finish line and there was a nice atmosphere at the end and a real sense of achievement. Date of review: July 21, 2008

In short: Deja vous hills In full: A great day overall with spot on organisation, marshalling, signs and water points. Still a bit sore 3 days later but it was worth it. Some really long downhill stretches however I am sure that all runners were aware that with each fast downhill meant the same uphill to come. Date of review: July 18, 2007

In short: 48 hours later and still hurting...still having nightmares about miles 11-12. Fab race! In full: Fantastic organisation and great course. Whoever thought this course up clearly needs careful watching when there is a full moon. Fab day out except between miles 11 and 12, which lasted about 6 miles, not one (I'm sure of it!!). In short: Hard work! In full: Beautiful school grounds for the start, and then into the woods for a never-ending switch-back of forest trails - and lots of climbs. Good value. English running at its best! Date of review: July 16, 2007

In short: As advertised - a slog in Surrey! :) In full: This is a well organised event. The route is clearly marked and well populated with water stations manned by some really cheerful and sportive helpers (many thanks). This event has been compared to the Mid Summer Munro however I don't think that is the correct comparison. Yes, lots of hills but at least you can run all the way round the slog! I think it compares to an elongated G-3 – nothing wrong with that (just it is different to the Munro). As an indication of the Slog and Munro differences I was 15% over my road ½ for the slog and 28% over for the Munro. A good event. Date of review: July 16, 2007

In short: Been while since I last raced, and this was a lovely one to start back again - good organisation, a lovely setting and a real challenge as well. Wish I had been less knackered as I might then have been able to enjoy the scenery and views ! Date of review: July 16, 2007
