In short: Mental strength needed for this one as well as physical stamina
In full: This was certainly the toughest event I have ever entered, and I certainly paid the price for adding this run onto the back of a hectic triathlon training schedule.
I would strongly advise anyone doing this run to take a support crew with them since there were no real arrangements in place to collect runners who had to drop out at checkpoints. The chance to take on enough solid food would also be a huge bonus.
I was concerned about the poor communication between checkpoint staff - nobody appeared to be phoning ahead to inform volunteers who had dropped out.
I would like to say a huge thanks to the couple who helped me between CP3 and CP4 and took pity on a very wet/cold/lost female!

Would I do it again. NO! Well, maybe......

In short: Not for the faint hearted...
In full: This was a fantastic opportunity to go the distance over extremely tough terrain. There was nothing about this race that was easy, but the support of fellow runners and support crews was excellent. Some found navigation difficult but often that was due to fatigue or poor map reading, the guide from the organisers was clear and well presented.

Do this race if you are mentally ready for a challenge and physically in pretty good shape.

In short: A fantastic course with a bit of everything
In full: I loved the route, there was beautiful scenery, road, trails, woods, fields. The conditions were tough, we were running into the wind and it was very wet and muddy, this made it even more rewarding to finish. Support along the route and from other runners was excellent. You need to map read, the navigation wasn't too difficult but reccying beforehand would save a lot of time. This was definitely one of my favourite running experiences.

In short: Wet, tough, muddy and wet ( I know I said that already but it was so wet I thought I'd say it twice)
In full: A well supported but tough challenge.
This is certainly not for the faint hearted but then you wouldn't consider it if you were would you!? Some comments are against the organisation of the event. I think it was as well organised as it could be. The weather was appalling and this made the going very tough (felt like a 56 mile long assault course) but the support given was warm and genuine and each checkpoint was met with encouragement from the support crew. If you like to test yourself and fancy a difficult ultra then do this. You do need to follow a map, you will be knackered, it is a long way and you might get lost - but isn't that the point?

In short: The Race was billed as a 56 mile ultra marathon where runners should be self sufficient for food. That is exactly what us runners got. The race was made more difficult by the poor conditions but overall an excellent event.

In short: Glad I was a support team and not a participant!
In full: A tad worrying that just because I and a friend were wearing high viz jackets that runners thought we were organisers! However, if we hadn't been there for some runners they might still be out there or worse still under a car! Definitely in need of signage on the roads and could really do with marshals at some of the busy junctions as runners in the zone could easily wander straight out!

In short: Tough but tremendously rewarding experience
In full: Even without the terrible weather this would have been a tough race. A combination of having to navigate 56 miles with a lot of climbing made it a challenge both mentally and physically.

It was very well organised with good support along the route and a warm welcome at the end from people who had been out all day. Thanks to all who helped in any way.

This was my longest run and I'd have to say it was a tremendous experience and this race has potential iconic status in the running calendar.

If you're thinking about doing it next year... I'd advise doing it with a running mate with a support team at least at checkpoints 2,3,4 and 5. Also you don't need to overdo the training. We did 4 weeks of 60 - 65 miles including a marathon and our longest run (30 miles) in one week. Although we were tired at the end, we still had the energy to up our pace in the last six miles - so although we were exhausted we must have had something left!

If you fancy an ultra you'd have to go a long way to beat this one.

In short: in short one of the hardest and most challenging events I've ever undertaken
In full: Really enjoyed this one. The rain and wind and mud all added to the adventure with the added difficulties of finding your way. It must have been very difficult coming up with the route which passed through some amazing country side. The highlight apart from finishing was getting to the top of Ditchling Beacon and just as we got to the top there was break in the cloud and mist leaving increeible views looking back to where we had come from. The organisation and the support from other runners was superb from start to finish.
This event has all the ingredients of becoming a classic.
