In short: Average in every respect In full: Others have said it all really - quick route through inevitably dull suburbia. Decent pockets of support and loads of water stations - I disagree with some here and found the pouches much better than expected. Marshalls en-route were excellent.
'Race village' was absolute chaos before the start and not much better afterwards - baggage reclaim was being handled by a bunch of bored teens who took your number then wandered off to chat to their mates.
Pre-race info was handled on the cheap - download your own race pack from a hidden corner of the particularly impenetrable website - and the advertised energy drinks never appeared. Signage throughout was terrible - I'm sure the white background signs with all the race branding on them looked really nice on a screen but if you make them too small and put them against any sort of real world background they become invisible pretty quickly.
All that having been said, there was, overall, a reasonable amount of space to run in and the absence of any scenic distraction aids concentration for running at potential - I can't blame anybody but myself for the elementary pacing errors which caused a blow-up in the last 10k and the new PB not hitting the GFA target. In short: Worth the long trip. In full: My 3rd Manchester Marathon and certainly not my last. Deffo a PB course but unfortunately not for me this year after hitting the wall on mile 15-16, the support along the route really is something and the marshals were once again fantastic. I'll be back. Date of review: April 10, 2014
In short: Flat and fast with great atmosphere - did Manchester proud In full: Perfect running weather and a truly flat and fast course meant I smashed 12 mins off my PB. Great support all the way round (except the more rural section in Carrington) with bands and choirs to provide entertainment all made for a nice friendly atmosphere. Agree with the comments re signage (particularly at the start) and the mile markers in the latter stages seemed to be out by c0.2m but all in all a great race which I would definitely run again. In short: Excellent organisation and the Mancs make it so special! In full: My first ever marathon run around the street i live on, it couldn't have been more special. I thought the organisation on the day was top notch and the support from the crowds was outstanding and extremely motivational.
The scenery isnt the best, but its where i live, so i gave it 4!
I would like to do other marathons but I will definitely be back to my hometown marathon one day. I hope this race continues to grow and grow.
