In short: Was my first half marathon which after reading some of the reviews was quite daunting (hills etc). If you've done some hill work in your training you should be fine with this. The worst bits are at roughly 3 & 6 miles but can be done at a steady pace In full: The downhill bits following them will allow you to pick your speed back up. All in all a great race, would i do it again? Yes, I've already signed up for next year. Do it, you'll love it. Date of review: May 17, 2013
In short: Great organisation, great medal, great value, great race In full: Very good organisation and plenty of water on route. Starting corral seemed to work somehow. There wasn't much pushing past despite not being separated by times. The start was very good with no bottlenecks. Excellent support with plenty of jelly babies and even a hosepipe shower from the locals. The first half was more challenging than the second half and it was great to get to Kirkstall Abbey knowing you we're on the home stretch. Great support at the end with impressive medal and tshirt. Also impressed with the ability to get a print out of your finishing time literally straight after you finished. We'll be back next year especially with the great early bird discount! In short: Tough start but overall a good race. In full: Uphill start was tough but good to get it out of the way. Start was well organised but I found the mile markers were hard to spot and mile 4 the sign was being held up by a policeman! I was expecting closed roads so having to run in one lane of a dual carriageway with traffic next to me slowed me down and made me slightly nervous. Very good at the finis though great atmosphere from the crowds and a very good t shirt. I got a personal best taking 11 minutes of my last time so a good race for me I would run it again. In short: Challenging but enjoyable run. In full: The first four miles up hill felt like they would never end, but they were definitely worth the effort. The crowds were great and at the end I felt like I had really achieved something. Date of review: May 13, 2013
In full: This was my first Half marathon so can't compare to others. I agree with other comments that the start while well organised did lack atmosphere. On the course I found the crowds really supportive and the final bit was uplifting with many people cheering me on. The hills are challenging but you get plenty of help on some quite long downhill sections. I'll be back next year. Date of review: May 13, 2013
In short: Very well organised, excellent goody bag and nice support. In full: Fifth time of running and still enjoy it. As a local, this is a fixture in my annual running calendar and I would say that the organisation has got even better. The t-shirt and medal are fantastic and the bottle necks of last year had been organised away through a wider start. Lots of very good natured banter with other runners and nice local support. Would thoroughly recommend, despite the cheeky hills. Date of review: May 13, 2013
In short: thanks for the jelly babies at half way In full: This is the 4th time I have done this and the first few miles don't get any easier, but after 6/7 miles it does get 'easier'. Good work by the spectators handing out jelly babies and oranges. Plenty of water stations and the t-shirt is very good. Would recommend Date of review: May 13, 2013
In short: Undulating out, flat in In full: Home city half, it had to be done at some stage. The start coral gave a realistic start place for the slightly quicker runner. Crowds were good in town but dotted in and out around less populated areas (much like Edinburgh Marathon). I quite enjoyed the undulations and challenges of a few hills in the first half. The water stations were about right. As said previously, no sports drinks until the end but I didn't think they were needed.
Once out in Weetwood I knew the backbone of the race was broken, drifting back down to Kirkstall Road and the long but flat drive to the line.
I shave a couple of seconds off my pb but could have done a bit more on a different course. Good finishing area and a great t-shirt.
Most importantly for me, my wife didn't go into labour. 4 days over and counting!!! Date of review: May 13, 2013
