In short: Overall a fairly relaxed, scenic race on a freezing day, bag collection afterwards was a big let down though. In full: The race itself was lots of fun - it starts by running through some pretty dreary watford suburbs before soon heading out into lovely undulating countryside on quite country roads/lanes and stays out in the country right through till the last couple of miles. In a few places it was a bit crowded but no real bottlenecks. There were 3 or 4 manageable hills that spiced things up a bit but it was otherwise pretty flat. I was a bit suprised that there were no toilet facilities along the route, only at the start/finish and those are pretty hard to get into just before the race. Friendly marshalls but this year there wasnt much in the way of crowds (I dont blame them - it was freezing!). I ran a PB and enjoyed the race a lot, my only gripe being the total lack of organization getting your bag back after the race. At race HQ in the town hall there seemed to be about 3 guys trying to find and then hand out all the bags for the 2000 sweaty, exhausted runners who were standing around in a huge chaotic scrum. It took me over an hour to get near the front and then finally to get one of the poor guys attention - not really how I had planned to spend my time post race - and I'm sure there were lots of runners that were there even longer. I would recommend the race as a whole but I would also recommend you find somewhere else to leave your belongings if you can. Date of review: February 18, 2009
In short: Undulating was an Understatement! In full: This was not an undulating - it was hilly! Very Hilly! At one point you had to shuffle down a really steep hill to ensure you didn't fall over.
The start was confusing; one for men and one for women and vets and it wasn't made clear which was which.
The chip system was rubbish and didn't clock you as you came in but instead was a few people that came running up to you after you had finished for a while. My gun time was better than my chip time and I was half way across the field when the gun went off. Good job I self-timed really. Date of review: February 10, 2009
In short: Bit of a let down In full: People giving out the drinks at the water stations just kept getting in the way. The map in the race guide is worse than useless and can't understand the no ipod rule. Date of review: February 8, 2009
In short: Generally my first half of the year. In full: Great race.Hilly and challenging course. I usually use this as a tester to see where I am at the start of the year. 8 minute improvement on last years time with less effort , NICE. Date of review: February 6, 2009
In short: My first half marathon - beginner friendly, I would say! In full: People kept talking about 'the hills' but they didn't seem too bad to me - I train on Hampstead Heath, maybe that's why. The uphills are short and steep but the downhills seemed longer and more gentle. Marshalls did a great job. Date of review: February 6, 2009
