In short: A mud bath and a half In full: Probably the most fun I've had in mud since I was 8, only this time my mum didn't send me to bed early and stop me from watching Star Trek. This was really hard work, particularly over the last two miles. It's one of those races that just keeps throwing new challenges at you. Once you;ve negociated the puddles and the muddy fields there's a climb. The trail is so muddy by then that I practically skied down again before hitting the ice cold stream at the end. My only gripe: after all this a race memento would have been nice, but I suppose I will always have the mud engrained in my shoes to remind me. (It took two showers to get it off the rest of me.) In short: Disappointing In full: I had a great run that day I loved every minute, no problems for me. I have to say that I was sorely disappointed in Thornbury RC when I found out that two of my fellow club runners were told by marshalls not to continue the race after a mile for being "too slow", I didn't think you could be "too Slow" in a race that has no cut off time advertised. I love this race, this year was my second rollick, the way I feel at the moment, it'll probably be my last. Date of review: January 25, 2009

In short: A good race, but really, really hard... In full: This was a bit of a mud-fest, more so than I expected (more fool me!). The views and countryside were excellent, the mud was as bad if not worse than Sodbury, and as for the one and a half miles into the wind along the eponymous riverbank, well the less said the better. Only a couple of downsides - it needed two drink stations not just one, and I am sorry to hear that a runner at the back of the field was stopped after a mile as they were too slow. The race did not have a time limit on any literature so I feel they have little right to impose one on the day, when people have paid money and made the effort to travel to the race. Other than those minor quibbles, it was an excellent race and we will be back next year (in my off roaders, rather than slicks...) Date of review: January 21, 2009

In short: Mud, wind and puddles - big puddles! In full: A good, well organised local event which most runners would enjoy - mud, puddles and lots of splashing should be enough to bring out the kid in everyone! Date of review: January 20, 2009

In short: Muddy marvellous! In full: First time for this event and well worth it. Described as multi-terrain but multi-mud would be more accurate! It is a popular urban legend that the Inuit or Eskimo have an unusually large number of words for snow. However, I'm sure Thornbury Running Club must have a country legend for an unusually large numbers of words for mud! Curiously, the RW's events page had two listings for this race: one @ 8.1 miles and the other @ 8.7 miles, with water stations every 5 miles! Was I supposed to go round twice?! Well, I'll definitely do it again next year! Date of review: January 20, 2009

In short: After ll that mud, my complexion must be great! In full: An excelent event, well organised and marshalled. Basically, 13.9km of mud, ocassionally broken up by stretches of water, some of them with mud underneath! I have to say that despite the weakness in my legs by about 5k, I really enjoyed it! The stong headwind along the river was exhausting, but a couple of short climbs in the later stages were re-energising. I appreciated the short stream section just before the finish, particulary as my wife, who was spectating at this point, got rather wet when someone fell in. I don't know who the runner was, but if they read this - thanks! I will do my best to get down tho do this again in the future. Date of review: January 18, 2009

In short: Very muddy and disappointing In full: I suppose some people love to run on muddy terrain. These people may enjoy the RR, but my wife and I were pulled out after just one mile by one of the lady marshals as being too slow. We can usually go faster but this mudfest ensured that unless you were careful you could sink in the mud at places. Glorious scenery and beutiful countryside but not a race we would consider doing again. Muddier than the Sodbury Slog is the way a few finishers described it to us, and they were probably right. In short: Muddy! In full: Loads of mud and water, which was worse for short people like me as it nearly came up to my waist. I'd say this race was tougher than the Mayhill Massacre! Tough course but what fantastic fun. The marshalls were great and the cakes at the end were a lovely. Well done Thornbury a fantastic event for those people that love off road running. The ladies showers were not great after as only a trickle came out (I think all the men were taking it up next door!)but hey ho if thats the only bad point the club should be pleased.
