In short: One of my favourites slightly let down this year! In full: Love this race and the sunny weather really shows the scenery off. Friendly marshalls and local support makes this a pleasure to run. The route changes that had to be made this year seem to have foxed the organisers. I also found to route 1/5th of a mile longer than a HM and the start coral was too cramped. I'll still do it next year though ;-) Date of review: April 14, 2015
In short: Cramped start and 1/5th of a mile too long! In full: Due to lanscaping works around the pier the start had to be moved, but it was too cramped and the funnel would only allow 3 runners abreast. The first 4.5 miles were quite hilly and undulating, whilst the last 4 miles along the promenade were into a strong westerly wind, which affected PBs. The mile markers from Mile 7 onwards were either missing or incorrectly placed, including the 11 Mile marker being placed at the 10 mile point. Most worryingly was that the course (measured on two GPS devices and an App) was 1/5th of a mile too long! Inexcussable, but still less of an error than the extra 3kms on the 10km route! In short: great race (all things considered) In full: I think the organizers managed to make the best race possible Some might not realize the course had to be amended due to the work going on around the pier so the start and finish were both different to normal Also the course was to long by approx 1.2 metres Nice run along the "beach" though Date of review: April 12, 2015
In short: Good intentions but let down in a few key area In full: What went well: Good Water stops, well Marked course, Friendly marshals, nice day on the beech What went not so well: The start area was a joke, the course was over long but about 1/5 a mile Summary: Sort out the start, double check the course measurements and it would be a much better race. Glad I didn't do the 10k, there seemed to be some very annoyed runners at the end of that race! Date of review: April 12, 2015
In short: Ran out of water at the 3/4 mile marker :o( In full: I had high hopes for this race but they were dashed quite soon. The first water stop was supposed to be at mile 3. I saw the empty bottles on the ground when I approached mile 3 but became all to aware that they had run out and the marshalls had disappeared. The marshalls I found at mile 4/5 had no idea where the next water stop would be, I eventually had to find a kiosk at mile 5 and buy some, it was a hot day and not pleasant, despite hydrating well before the race. (Water stops resumed at 6 and about mile 9). The roads are not closed for this race and the paths are narrow, so when not running on the promenade you do have to navigate around the public. Being a seaside town there are a lot of elderly to run around and children on bikes, so whilst it is flat, you cannot get a lot of speed up due to the obstacles. I did not enjoy this race, I felt the marshalling was not good and non-existent on places. I would have preferred to pay more money and get better looked after. Date of review: April 7, 2014
In short: Windy and hot!! In full: Decent race. Short sharp climb in the first mile and then pretty much flat other than a gentle climb from 9-11. Miles 3-8 along the seafront were directly into the wind and it became a bit of a grind towards the end. A big relief to turn out of it but then it was suddenly pretty hot! Plenty of drinks stations and a well timed sponge station at about 9 miles. Nice downhill at 11 and a decent finish along the seafront. Not much in the way of support other than the start/finish but there were a few friendly locals dotted about - special mention to the man in a superman costume, wearing Groucho Marx glasses and playing the keyboard!! The roads weren't closed for the 2/3 miles we were on them but it didn't cause any problems. Date of review: March 31, 2014
In short: Great but with two problems In full: This was a great half marathon. The hills people are going on are really nothing. I am a right hill-o-phobe and I didn't have a problem with them. The scenery on the first two miles is very nice and then a run along the beach is also pleasant. It got a bit dull as it was the same constantly. This was my first and I will be back again.
The two main problems I had was..
1) The start pens was ridiculously small and optimistic. I think runners that where going to do it in about 1.40 where way back in the 2.10 mark! The pens where tiny but it didn't congest to much as there was a wide starting leg for people to sort out.
2) My biggest problem and what ruined my race was between mile 11 - 12. The route went on to a pavement which was littered with park cars, lamp-posts, sing posts, and runners. It just got really congested and it was single laned for a long time. I actually injured my self dodging runners that had stopped.
Apart from those it was a great run and will be back next year to beat my time as i had to limp the last mile! Date of review: April 16, 2013
In short: Great route, lovely setting, mildly challenging, well organised. In full: My first half! Loved it, especially as the weather was so good. Most of it is along the bay, so fairly flat, but the climb for the first 2 miles is a good jolt to the muscles and even the descent back down to the bay is challenging as you can easily over extend a pull a muscle. In short: Really nice flat course with a great sea view! In full: I didn't notice that there were signposts at the start so you could start according to your predicted time but ended up having a great run right from the back, the field seemed to spread out quickly so I never really got stuck in a jam. The hills were barely there so I didn't think they had any real impact on speed so a really good course to try and go fast on. Date of review: April 8, 2013
