In short: Excellent race. Marshalls were brilliant. Good for first timers and PBs In full: This was my first Half Marathon. I used to do 10k races and Great South Run but had to stop for many years due to illness. I live in Gosport so I was able to train using most of the actaul route. The atmoshere was really good I was really thankful for all the encouragement from spectators and the Marshalls. I would recommend this event to beginners and anyone who wants to up their PB times. Thank you Gosport Road Runners for all your hard work and encouragement. Date of review: November 29, 2013
In short: Excellent if you want a fast course In full: Yes it's true - this is a great race! The course is very fast, very flat, well organised with a great turnout (sold out to 2000 entries this year), good value compared to "bigger races" (£16 entry), and a very good chance to get a PB if you're in the shape for it (I got one, 6 years after my last).
My GPS measured a total of 21.12km, so no complaints there (and a grand total of 11 metres of ascent!) and the mile markers all seemed bang on track.
The only "negative" as others have noticed is the scenery - but that's not why I do road races.
In short: very flat, very well organised, very enjoyable In full: This was my second Half, chosen by my running club for its PB potential, so I guess some of the rosy glow is down to running with my fellow club members, but it's a great Half. Very flat indeed, the scenery is mixed from sea front, suburban roads and a rather dreary airfield that they make really cheery with a fantastic samba drum band, I loved that. Very supportive marshalls all the way, great organisation, good buzz at the start and finish, great goody bag at the end, including what looked and tasted like home made cake! I'd recommend it as it has a great atmosphere, feels like all the locals join in and want us to be there, even if the scenery is not fantastic, and I knocked 4 mins off my time! In short: Friendly and fast race In full: Very friendly and well organised race, PB potential there but not quite for me this time, I'll be back next year though. Airfield was a welcome wide space after no-overtaking section on the cycle paths so no complaints there. Chip time was correct for me here but had a non recorded time at another race this year, timing mat came loose and had to hurdle it! not a great feeling especially as it was a PB but we're all human and there's always the next race. As last year this was a great overall experience again. Date of review: November 20, 2013
In short: Flat, fast and super smooth organisation In full: The only way this race could be better is by getting a road closure to avoid the pavement section from 5-7 miles. A very small gripe for an otherwise flawless event :) Date of review: November 20, 2013
In short: Reply regarding chip timing from Race Director In full: hi. I have seen one or more comments regarding problems we had with the chip timing. it is true we had an unexpectedly high number of chip read failures which affected the time it has taken to turn round fully accurate finish results. I can only apologise for this. the root cause was interference caused by a radio operator who, whilst relaying messages to race officials, stood close enough to the timing mats to cause issues. had I known this would have been an issue rest assured he would have been banished from the finish area all together. our friends at fullonsport have gone through the backup video footage of the finish line and I believe most corrections are now made. if you're still experiencing an issue please email me - email@example.com many thanks. In short: Well organised and enjoyable Half Marathon In full: Having only done the GSR before and this being my first Gosport Half Marathon I didnt know what to expect but i have to say that i had a really good time. It was a decent route, going through the airfield was quite good i thought. The street routes were ok but squeezed in places so hard to overtake at some points without going onto the roads. Seemed well organised and had a nice medal and goodybag at the end of it. I would definitely recommend it to everyone. Date of review: November 20, 2013
In short: Chip timing disaster In full: Wanting to do this race for a while. Seemed to go well on the day but checking the results 3 days later I am down as a DNS even though I have a medal to prove I was there. Up until that point I would have forgiven the slightly dull route. In their defence I would say that the marshals on the course were fantastic and very encouraging. Shame about the timing system and as my garmin was on the blink I have no real idea what I did. Date of review: November 20, 2013
