In short: Good fun and a decent challenge, shame the wind and rain prevented finishers from hanging around to enjoy the various stalls In full: This was my first mud race and it definately fuelled my passion for some more! Friendly stewards, a decent, challenging course and a real 'one-for-all and all-for-one' attitude whether you were in a team, or on your own, (something that came in very useful with the final three walls of the obstacle course!)
I loved every minute; from loosing my shoe in the mud at mile 2, to struggling down the irrigation trench at the end and everything in between.
The weather spoiled the overall party atmosphere and the chance for more spectators and more use of the tents. A beer tench and perhaps a communal marquee would have been a nice touch and as nice as they were, the race organisers/ stewards needed to be a bit more clued up to make this truly outstanding.
Only a few tweaks needed and this could be a really excellent race.....might just come back next year for a second taste!
In short: Nice off-road course set in Rockingham castle grounds with some challenging obstacles; organisation requires some tweaks. In full: Great location and if weather had been nicer I'm sure there would have been more spectators. 10 mile course had a mix of obstacles which included some of the horse jumps, barbed wire crawl, monkey bars and other stuff. Obstacles were well spaced so you had time to recover between (apart from the end!). Not much in the way of water obstacles which would have been nice. Tough obstacles included carrying two water filled containers around the 4x4 course, tyre carrying, monkey bars, scaling wooden walls. Some problems were evident...lack of marshals and unclear course marking meant some runners didn't complete full course or got delayed whilst working out where to go. Start was a bit of a free for all so at some obstacles involving carrying of water filled barrels, there weren't enough for everyone. This meant some runners did the obstacle without the burden! Ideally some of the obstacles need a shorter/smaller version to accommodate those of a shorter stature...and some obstacles could do with tweaking to accommodate female runners (water filled barrels were v-heavy!!). Might be an idea to put a rope on one side of the wooden walls too...when the slime covered runners hit the wall it became very slippy! The final straight is great; filled with climbing bars, two sets of monkey bars and a bunch of wooden walls to scale; very tough but great fun and great for spectators. Didn't see many photographers... Catering was great :-) Burger van, hog roast, proper coffee stand. Pressure wash was available to get cleaned off; nice touch. With a few tweaks this will be a fab event. I'd definitely do this again... Date of review: June 25, 2013
