In short: Good flat run but I think ther oute could be better In full: I'm not a big fan of races where you're doing laps but as it's my hometown, I thought i'd give it a go
It's a good run, nice and flat and definitely PB potential however I did find it a bit dull.
Southend has got some great places to run which they could include in the roue. I'd love to see them extend the route out to Leigh-on-sea. Maybe incorporate Chalkwell Park and then back along the seafront. You'd then have a couple of hills to tackle..the one coming out of Old Leigh would be a good challenge
I guess closing the roads is an issue so it's probably not that easy
Anyhow good run, hopefully the sun will be out next year Date of review: June 28, 2013
In short: Flat course, good loop, nice atmoshpere. In full: The Southend half is a good race, flat course with a good loop (twice). It was nice to see the leaders go past you twice as normal I never see who wins. The day was good but the event organistaion could have been a bit better, the car park chaos delayed the start by 15minutes (good) as the queues for the five portaloo's was long! The baggage reclaim took almost as long as the run which was a bit disappointing. Also, there were no XL t-shirts to buy (proceeds to Havens) which is also a shame. Date of review: June 19, 2013
In short: Flat Sea front race, mostly apart from start and finish. Plenty of water stations with cups and sponges. In full: This was my second Half Marathon and first in my home town. It is a flat sea front race for the most part excepting the start and finish. There are plenty of water stations with cups and sponges. The baggage area is very busy before and after, but as it is free and the entry is cheap so there can be few complaints. Race was delayed by 15 mins this year but did not seem to upset too many people. One tip, if you are looking to run a PB then make sure you get to the front as the start is not as segregated as other road races I have run in. Overall very enjoyable event. In short: Fast course, good support enjoyable. In full: Lots of positives about the race, good location, good support, fast course and plenty of drinks stations.
Only negative, if they state in the race pack that the race will start at 10am sharp then don't delay it 17 minutes to allow those attending late to run. I travelled down over 75 miles and was there at 8:15, before the organisers had even finished setting up. No excuse. Date of review: June 12, 2013
In short: A good flat half with a big field and a decent atmosphere. In full: This is the third time I've taken part in the Southend half and I've noticed improvements on the previous occasions. The biggest positives were the marshalling and the water/sponge stations which were plentiful - it was easy to stay hydrated. After the start it was a bit bunched for the first few turns, but after a while there was enough space to run in comfortably. There were some decent pockets of support along the route which was good considering it was a cold day.
The medal was the best yet, and hopefully not develops the rust spots of the previous couple I collected. The only thing left to improve is the finishing area which was fairly confused, and I noticed a long long queue develops at the baggage collection tent. The finish area was good though - nothing like a cup of tea and a burger at the end of a race! Date of review: June 11, 2013
In short: HOME RUN In full: I wasn't so sure about doing laps in my home town, i thought i'd get bored, but i actually enjoyed it very much. Had the weather been a bit nicer, it may have brought extra crowds out and made the delay at the beginning a bit easier to bear.
However, apart from the last few miles which took on half the parkrun course, the course was very flat and i took 10mins off my half mara PB. all my friends also gained a PB. if i could recommend a race, it'd be this one.
My only gripe was the confusion and crowding at the finishers funnel. Date of review: June 10, 2013
In short: Best marshalled race I've run In full: Seriously impressed with this. Excellent marshals--loads of them and all incredibly supportive and friendly. Sensibly laid-out and equipped starting area (way better than e.g. 2012 Manchester marathon). Lots of water stations, too. Top marks to all involved in the organising. Date of review: June 10, 2013
