In short: Great race shame about the wind In full: It was my 5th Sleaford half only missing last year with injury in the last six years.I know people had problems getting their numbers and chip at the beginning but we arrived early and had no problems. It sits well in your training for a spring marathon. The race its self was a good all round race again wind on your back for first 3 or 4 miles but i know having done it a few times it would be in our faces going up the long steady 3 or 4 mile slope up to 9 miles. The marshalls were fantastic as always and i will try and make it back next year Date of review: March 3, 2014
In short: Great Marshalls, mix up at start but overall good In full: Positives were the Marshalls, plenty of support and banter A bit disorganised with the number collection (why have races stopped posting numbers and chips out?) Only other negatives was a Corsa full of marshalls kept driving around the course and actually get more in the way that doing anything. Can you get bigger size tops, never big enough. Not focusing on the negatives, it was a good race and organiser coped well with the very windy conditions. Well done Striders Date of review: March 1, 2014
In short: Always a peasure to run this though the weather oft conspires against it! In full: A few problems this year with collection of numbers/chips and also the tea queue was hideous. However Matt the Race Director was very quick to 'fess up' and intends to make changes for next year - good for you, Matt. The course is always challenging, I personally can't wait to get the track section out of the way cos I hate off roading, but I know it's there and its always a relief to get off the track. Of course this time round I was just dreading turning into the wind - it was quite horrendous and at times I wondered if I was making any forward progress at all. Given that I managed to PB, don't understand how but boy am I chuffed! Thank you to all the smiling encouraging marshalls, to the lady at the finish who helped me to remain standing once I'd got over the finish line, and to all at Sleaford Striders who make this event a pleasure to attend year after year Date of review: February 25, 2014
In short: Good in every way! In full: My very first time and, it was exactly what it said on the tin: Very friendly and encouraging volunteers, a challenging enough course, 'Haribo' during the run (really appreciated them - thank you!), super t-shirt, free hot drink afterwards, and a banana! And, on top of that - chip timing! Shame that nobody managed to switch off that "wind machine"!!!! Date of review: February 25, 2014
In short: Well organised, friendly, challenging and fun In full: My first time at the Sleaford Half and if it was of for the fact that I am moving South in 2 weeks, I would be back.
Excellent communication beforehand (emails, course photo updates fro. The day before, tweets, you name it!), well organised on the day (not even the smallest quibble from me about the slight chip related delay), excellent Marshalls.
I thought the course was actually quite tough; the farm tracks at the start and a fair few hills, which on a calm day would have been one thing but into 22-25mph winds it was tough going. That said, I did PB by nearly 3minutes for an 87:04 so mustn't grumble!!
Nice goodie bag, great technical t-shirt and free cuppa (I would pay extra to get a medal, but that's just me).
The great communication continued long after the race with result updates, photos and well wishes.
Well done Sleaford Striders. A great event. Date of review: February 25, 2014
In short: Great Event. Will be back In full: A great event which balanced very nicely between feeling like quite a big race, but with the atmosphere of a small and friendly event.
Great facilities, loads of free car parking very close to the HQ and the HQ was very close to the start line so getting sorted before the race was all very easy. Communication leading up to the event was excellent, with regular emails and updates via facebook - including photos and info about conditions and the potential hazards on the course.
Love the bright orange technical T-shirt and the voucher for a free warm drink was very, very welcome after a hard race on a blustery day. There was quite a tough section between miles 6-9 which was pretty much all uphill and on the day it was into a strong headwind. I think without the wind, it could easily have been a PB course, but conditions put a stop to that. You have to accept that you may well get anything in February though.. and for us this year, it was wind!
Definitely will be back for another crack at it in the future.
