In short: Absolutely brutal - do not underestimate it! In full: This was my 14th marathon and, barring one where I was in jured before I started, the hardest I have done by far.
The whole organisation of it is great with a nice atmosphere. Nice to be running a race that is aimed to raise money for charity as its sole purpose too.
However, it is HARD. The undulation chart on the website gives the impression that it is a tough first half with easier second. This isn't really the case as the second half, especially around mile 20 is very hard too. This is in NOW WAY a first timers race and not for anyone who isn't really fit.
What a challenge though! Date of review: May 31, 2012
In short: A fantastic first marathon In full: I loved this race, my first marathon and despite being dogged by injuries for two months before I still made it round and loved all of it. Beautiful scenery, great weather and excellent support from the marshals. Date of review: May 27, 2012
In short: Loved this race. Great atmosphere and superb scenery In full: Brilliant organisation, genuinely nice support through out and a fabulous location. Beware the 'undulations' which by London standards are hills! They are constant and tiring after 16 miles or so. Highly recommended race Date of review: May 27, 2012
In short: I left my heart in the Lakes.. In full: As one of this year's 10in10'ers the main marathon was my 10th outing around the Lake and what a fabulous culmination to a life changing 10 days. The scenery is beautiful and the organisation and atmosphere leaves little to be desired. This truly is a very special race organised by a very special charity. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great day out Date of review: May 27, 2012
In short: Fabulous first time marathon - will definitely do it again! In full: Really enjoyed the scenery, crowds & atmosphere of this marathon. The fuel stations were well stocked & at regular intervals so keeping hydrated wasn't an issue. What I did have issue with was that toilets were not signed on route. I got caught short at 20 miles, had to run 100m off route to get to a public toilet only to find it was 20p to get in!!! Nevertheless I will return next year as it was a truly memorable run & I want to beat my time! Date of review: May 26, 2012
In short: Not my bag In full: At the risk of being in the minority I did not enjoy this marathon. There were things I could have done better to make it more enjoyable,I should have trained for more stamina on Hills as to my mind it was either very uphill or very downhill ( I know its the lake district ) This trashed my legs and by mile 21 I was praticly crippled. I should have carried more water because as the run went on The 3 mile distance between stations was to my mind, to far apart to stay hydrated. Also the roads were not closed and as it was a busy sunday I got squashed against the side of the road by cars on a few occasions, I was later told by the B & B owner who was a marshel that a runner got hit by a car in Windimere, he was not badly hurt but it did end his marathon at mile 20. I accept that the setting is second to none, the lake district is the best looking place on Earth after all. But if you are doing this for the first time or like me for your first marathon be aware it is very hilly. There is not enough water stations to forgo not carrying fluid between them, paticulary if it is a hot day and your not a fast runner, by that I mean like me it takes you a while to cover the three miles between stations. I know I am probaly the only negative review for this marathon but its points that some may find usefull. Date of review: May 25, 2012
In short: Hilly and beautiful. In full: This is just the most fantastic race. The views are perfection, the organisation was perfect and the hills a little energy sapping! Got severe cramp at mile 21 which continued until I finished, yet still loved every minute of it. Can't wait to do it again and all for a worthy cause. 10 in 10ers truly amazing as well.
