In short: Does the job In full: I'm a plodder so find laps quite depressing (got lapped quite early on!!) but I know some people like them as easier to pace themselves. At least there was a larger field than last year with a greater variety of abilities, so I managed to avoid coming last :p
Nice for spectators who could cross field and see you run past 6 times!!
Overall a solid race. Nothing special, organisation was ok, plenty of parking in Romsey car parks (not sure why you couldn't park at Broadlands) and medal nicer than last year.
I got told by the last marshall about 200m from the end that apparently I shouldn't have been wearing an ipod - not sure why this was the case as it was all off-road, but if it is then suggest the organisers actually tell everyone beforehand (on entry details/website and before race) rather than almost at the end!! In short: No frills 5 miler, worth a trip to get a new PB In full: As you can see from my comment on the thread I had reservations about the change of venue, as it happens I was pleasantly surprised. I accept and agree that running over the same ground three times can be disheartening, but feel that in this case it worked well. It gave the spectators plenty of opportunity to provide support. Especially my girlfriend who tends to be very loud.
It was quite a mixed field, and so should appeal to everyone. However if you’re a slower runner you need to be aware that faster people will lap you.
We always stay behind a little while at the end to encourage the slower runners, it’s nice to see them smile even though they’re obviously working hard. The faster runners always seem to be in a rush to get away, and in this case they had to pass people who were still racing without even a nod or a word of encouragement; come on guys it doesn’t do any harm just to say ‘Well done’ or even the dreaded ‘Keep going nearly there’.
Facilities in the grounds were limited but fortunately it wasn’t raining.
I was surprised that we couldn’t get access to Broadlands until 9.30, this meant that people were starting their warm up around the roads, I feel that a little earlier would have been preferable.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few comments regarding the stretch of the route that wasn’t on tarmac, it was quite rutted. The organisers had gone to the extent of placing a few cones next to the worst potholes. With a little care it didn’t pose any problems.
Even at this price it would have been nice to see chip timing, I don’t imagine it cost too much to stage this race. Am I missing something here?
All in all a nice little race without any frills. If the distance is confirmed it would be worth a trip just to try out for a new PB.
In short: It was a nice route, and good overall In full: Only quibble was that one marshall was telling the slow runners to keep to the left hand side of the tarmac and the next marshall along was telling them to get over to the right to allow the fast runners to come past and overtake on the inside. This nearly caused a few accidents but only seemed to happen on the first lap. Date of review: January 23, 2011
In short: A very fast course with a decent field up front, coupled with the beauty of Broadlands In full: I loved this race - on private lands there was no worries from even parked cars, let alone moving ones, and the air quality benefitted as a result. The route was simple, and the 2.5 small laps to start no problem at all. The race appeared to be executed by about 3 or 4 people, but it all went perfectly, so what does that matter! Will be back... In short: Nice race but let down by some silly problems In full: An improvement compared to the previous race around the industrial estate.
Just a few problems that spoils it:
It is astounding that finish times were not taken for the results. I hope that the results on the site are just preliminary results and the times will be added later. If it is due to a lack of chip timing, then Concept Sport probably could have afforded it with the money that they have saved from not having road closures compared to previous years.
Inadequate car parking. Apparently there is parking at Broadlands but i dont know why this wasnt used.
The countdown to the start was not clear.
People a few lines from the front did not know the race had started.
Potholes around the course were unsafe. A cheap bag of sand could have been poured into them on the day to make them safe.
We needed prior warning of the cattle grids before we met them as running in a crowd towards them was unsafe. This was only a problem on the first lap when people were bunched together and couldnot see ahead.
Marshalls were nice though. Date of review: January 23, 2011
