In short: A very tough half-marathon, but strangely enjoyable!! In full: This is probably the toughest half-marathon I have ever done, majority off-road and loads of killer hills. Being an 'out and back' course you knew you had to go back up the nice downhills you did in the first half, including the massive set of steps!!
The organisation of the event was first-class right from the detailed instructions that were e-mailed out in advance, through to the parking, collection of race numbers, the race inself and the excellent cooked breakfast at the end.
There were a lot less marshalls than other races I have done but this wasn't a problem since the orange arrows on the route were very clear. The weather was good too (it would have been very muddy if it had rained) which meant that there were a good few spectators out, especially at the halfway point.
The race isn't the cheapest but you do get a lot for your money (t-shirt with you name on, quality medal and a momento, plus the breakfast) so all in all I would say it is excellent value.
The wife carrying race at the beginning was also a very amusing added bonus!!
In short: a tough but enjoyable half ! In full: as alaways with a race by dr.rob and his team you know it is going to be tough but you also know that you are going to enjoy every minute or it. great atmosphere and fantastic organisation with a feel good factor at the finish with a excellent medal,t-shirt and momento worth every penny .... In short: doesn't get any easier with experience but at least you know when the killer hills are coming up In full: this is a fantastic event. I have been lucky enough to run it every year so far and each year I appreciate it more. I defy anybody to run up the killer hill at 12.5 miles, but the downhill swoop to the finish line seems all the better for that. The whole thing is wonderfully organised and while it is a bit pricy it is well worth the money. A truly memorable day.
In short: I love this race, good organisation, great goodies, the forest is glorious. In full: From the second you arrive, you're greeted by smiling marshalls. Once your number is on they call you by your name, shouting encouragement. The race itself is hard, you have to pace the uphill section and hang on for dear life on the downhill ! There's a kick at the end, but the looong downhill open sprint to the finish is great. Everyone cheering you on, even at the back of the field you see some great sprint finishes. If you want a small friendly well organised race, set in beautiful countryside, I can't see you finding one any better than this.
