In short: A bit dull and grey - too 'estate-y' for my liking.. In full: Well what can I say, I ran this back in September 2008 and although I can't recall every single little detail about it, I do remember it putting me off Marathons for a good while..
Admittedly, I didn't have much to compare it to, but after running Stratford and Abingdon Marathon and feeling an incredible sense of warmth atmosphere wise, I must say Wolverhampton for me wasn't too inspiring.
Just remember running round a load of housing estates and there not being much else. Lots of long roads that dragged on endlessly and some quite challenging inclines at times..
Organisation was generally alright but the start was a bit staggered due to the other events going on..
Finish line was a bit of a joke really - not very grand or spectacular, but then I suppose it isn't a huge race.
Medal was a bit disappointing too - black and red 'Wolverhampton City Marathon Events' - I'm presuming the same medal was given out to all the cyclists, half Marathoners and Marathoners.. Nothing like some of the lovely gold ones you get at other events..
The Ron Seal of Marathons IMHO - does what it says on the tin. Date of review: October 19, 2009
In short: Not perfect; but not bad either! In full: Ok, I know many of you didn't think it was brilliant but it was my 1st ever half marathon and I must admit I loved it!
Yes there was no big bang at the start, but when you see everyone moving you just guess really. The rest of the organisation was brill, plenty of bottle stations and traffic mashalls etc. Crowd were fantastic, pretty much all the way round there were specators clapping, even one guy outside his house on his deckchair! Very demanding course; last 3 miles were the worst, plenty of goodies at the end including a lovely medal. Results arrived on the carvers website fast too, within 1 day!
My only other thing i'll say against it is that I feel sorry for the marathon runners, you're burning after 13.1 miles, you see the half marathon people come in and you have to carry on and do another 13 mile lap! If there was a 26.2 mile course for the marathon runners it'd be better and less de-motivating.
Thanks so much, see you next year!!! Date of review: September 15, 2008
In short: Good race. Well organised. Would run it again. In full: I'd agree with some of the comments regarding the start, in particular, the man with the start placard. It is your own fault though if you could not see what was going to happen. As we approached it was obvious that most people were filling in behind the cycle race and that if you wanted to be up the front you would need to be a bit proactive and move yourself up there. Good support and marshalling all round. Back again next year... Date of review: September 14, 2008
In short: This was not as good as 2007 In full: I like Wolverhampton Marathon, and it is my local marathon so I participate, but 2008 Marathon was a let down in some ways. They need to have some stations with energy drinks, maybe not for half marathon, but some of the full marathon people were exhausted. I think its important to have those extra energy refreshments for full marathon people. I like the crowds, it was raining but people were still out cheering. I hated how the in the Full Marathon 2nd lap you had to do that extra turn in, they should just extend the course around westpark, rather than make the full marathon people run back on ourselves near codsall road. That was really demotivating. Date of review: September 8, 2008
In short: Well marshalled, dodgy organisation at the start, nice support despite the weather. In full: An average race spoilt a bit by the poor organisation at the start. I have no idea when the race actually started (no pistol, horn or hooter to be heard), it wasn't even clear where the official startline was. With no starting pens and a narrown path for the first mile or so it was all a bit chaotic as faster runners tried to edge past the joggers. A big thank you must go to the support staff along the route however who did a marvelous job in poor weather. That said, there were several dodgy parts during the second marathon lap with traffic coming from all directions, and having to 'stop look and listen' at road junctions was a little frustrating. You did get the feeling that the marathon runners were not the priority for the race organisers. Shame that there was no specific medal for the marathon either, I've done loads before but it must be disappointing for those completing the full marathon for the first time to be given a medal commemorating completion of an 'event'! With chip timing, and more thought and organisation going into the start I may be tempted to do it again, but this wasn't my best marathon experience (p.s this may all just be sour grapes as my time was pants). In short: what a disastrous start/finish In full: good news-now a decent medal and t'shirt. bad news-chaotic start ! firstly, why change the start procedure from previous years on the road outside west park ? if runners can run on this road in the race then why cant we start here. the top end runners were made to run around much slower relay runners and weave in and out to run at their pace. with the amount of runners involved starting areas based on predicted times would be useful. also, on the second lap of the marathon cars are too close to the runners. after over 20 miles dont really like cars within a metre of me !! being a local lad, will always support my local marathon BUT simple improvements are needed. to close, thanks to the marshalls who were very supportive-it is appreciated. In short: Yes folks, I agree that the start was awful In full: This had to be the worst start for such a large event that I've ever known. I couldn't believe the guy with the placard didn't have a loud hailer and to my knowledge there was no hooter at the start. Like many others I couldn't tell exactly when the start was, so my actual time was 45 seconds down on the official time. Very disappointing and a huge let down. To cap it all I left my faithful old tracky top at the start and it had disappeared when I finished. Not a great race at all and needs massive improvements for next year.
