In short: well organised but could be much better In full: Mostly, a well organised event, around pretty country lanes, and with a good sized field. After wind and rain just before the start, we were treated to warm and dry conditions, and a few clusters of supporters around the course. The location is very central within the midlands, which I guess is why it so popular. The description of flat and undulating is accurate. There were 3 well manned water stations - but no gels or energy drinks if you want those kind of things. All marshalls were enthusiastic and friendly. The down sides: Start line was too narrow for size field with a gate to leave the field. I was out of trouble near the front but I understand there was a bottle neck at the back. The finish was a mile from the start, and although there were buses back to the start, a bag drop would be far more sensible. I got cold very quickly. The leisure centre near the start allows you to use the facilities - inc locker and showers - for £1.50. This should be promoted - we just happened to find out on the day and took advantage of it. The goody bags were OK. However, there were only prizes for overall top 3. No recognition for us oldies. Not sour grapes on my part, but I think it shows an overall lack of respect for older runners abilities, and at >£20 per head, for 1000 runners, Im sure the budget could have stretched a little further..
In short: Nice fun, friendly race on a bank holiday In full: I signed up to the Lichfield Half Marathon knowing nothing about the event, or the city of Lichfield itself, more of a day out on a bank holiday affair. The drive down was very easy. Lots of parking. The competitors were all very friendly during the warm up, on the start line and throughout the race. The race marshals all seemed to be full of life and shouting lots of positive encouragement. The support in the little villages and in the towns was excellent. At one section of the race there was a small primary aged child dishing out cups of water outside her house. The scenery was very pretty and the weather was good if not a bit too warm. It was a great finish to the race down a large hill then a grassy finish line in the shadow of the Cathedral. The race finshers medal was very attractive and a great memo of the race.Goody bag was pretty average but I have had worse. Best of all off I got a PB which I could not really believe given the hilly course and the hot weather. The bottleneck at the start of the race was extremely annoying - I really think a new starting point might need to be arranged as standing round for nearly 40 seconds is not what I expected at the start of a race. Overall a cracking day out in Lichfield and can't complain about getting a PB (1.38.08) Date of review: May 20, 2014
In short: late start meant running is hot conditions In full: Start area very poor, not alot going on. 10.30 start so the slower runners were running in miday sun. coarse is okay. very undulating bit of a testing coarse. not a lot of support out and about until you got to the finish. poor goody bag (although i don`t run for that)more leaflets than helpful recovery things. second time here, so won`t be running again. In short: A good rural race that was not to far for me to get too. The walk back to the start, although it will not stop me returning next year, was the only downside. I got lost. Date of review: May 6, 2014
In short: Really enjoyable. Hassle free In full: Decent course. Would be a good PB course but weather starting to warm up. Linked up local villages nicely to get regular boosts from the onlookers. Loads of free parking and nice medal. In and out very quickly. Nearly fell over on the sprint for the line due to the lumpy grass field but this is just a minor poit. Date of review: May 5, 2014
In full: Found the course ok, but was pretty boring for the majority. Little support didn't help. And traffic being allowed to drive along the same side of the road as runners was out of order and dangerous at times. Finish area was good though, nice to be able to relax on the grass! In short: Well organised race In full: Well organised race but not one that does a lot for me. "Nice" route but very "samey" after a few miles. We all have races that clicked or don't for us and after running it for the second time this is one of my "don't". however that is no reflection on organisation and value for money, just my personal taste. In short: nice local race In full: Lichfield half was my first half two years ago; decided to return to the crime scene today, got a massive 7 minute PB so really happy. The atmosphere is great and good organisation, too but there are a couple of things the organisers should address for next year: - more portaloos! There were only seven or so near the starting line; there were three in the leisure centre which pretty quickly stopped coping with the volume of runners so to say - goody bag - I mean, seriously, a rice crispie bar and a gel plus a bunch of leaflets? Nice medal, though -very congested start, you dash off and pretty much immediately grind to a halt as there is a bottleneck of runners trying to get through the gates
I would do it again, the atmosphere is great and a lot of fellow parkrunners did it - so fixing the above would make it a great race!
