In short: Tough but really enjoyed it In full: Considering the adverse flooding across the country the organisers did a great job keeping this race going, and they were very accommodating of runners whose races had been cancelled. The course was challenging but fun and was the first I did well in for quite a while after coming back from an injury. Really enjoyed it. Date of review: November 17, 2015
In short: Excellent, challenging route, wonderful, encouraging marshals In full: Well-organised race. Route is usually challenging with many undulating hills but in the vicious gale force wind it was real test. 5 minutes faster on the return leg than the time going out which reflects the wind's effect. No support on the route except where the marshals cheered us on. They deserve special praise for being out in the cold wind for hours. A lovely low-key club race. Run and enjoy. In short: Very welcoming In full: My second competitive 1/2 marathon. 3 years since the last one. Wasn't too intimidating as an unaffiliated runner. Friendly encouragement from marshals, runners friendly too. Date of review: February 13, 2014
In short: Well organised club event on a challenging course. In full: Quite hilly which in itself makes PBs unlikely, but brutally exposed to the wind this year which made for a tough challenge. But like all good club run events, this was a well-organised race put on by an efficient team who knew what they were doing. Marshals were plentiful and good natured despite the hurricane conditions. Nice little touches like calling out the halfway times/positions and announcing finishers by name & club. Finish line staff were busy running round offering to fetch drinks & choc bars which was fab. Prizes were generous too for the size of the race. A good spring test to be commended and recommended. Date of review: February 12, 2014
In short: Challenging but satisfying In full: I entered this on the day following the cancellation of the flooded Wokingham Half Marathon 2 days previously. Deal Tri very helpfully updated their website to say they had on-the-day entries for us. Registration was very smooth in the morning, the marshalls were very encouraging and the signage was good. Deal Tri put on a very good race, for which I was especially grateful as my weekend could have been so disappointing after Wokingham was cancelled. The course has a number of hills, but none of them are particularly long. It is also quite exposed to the coastal winds which were in our faces for most of the first half. The roads were open but there was little traffic and it was well controlled by the marshalls. My first half marathon and there will be many more to come. Date of review: February 11, 2014
In short: Great race, but hilly. In full: First thanks to Deal Tri for organising this excellent race. Thanks in particular to the marshals who gave hours of their time, were very cheerful and did an excellent job in some very cold and windy weather.
First the hills. This is certainly a hilly half-marathon. According to mapometer the gross climb is 290m. This year my Garmin made it to be 227m. Somehow it didn't feel that hilly, since none of the hills were that long, though there were a lot of them. I thought the scenery was brilliant. No tractors this year. Generally I noticed very little traffic.
I'm surprised there hasn't been more comment about the wind. This was very cold and strong on the way out, but was less noticeable, in fact gave some help, on the way back.
The HQ area offered ample cheap parking. It's also a café which is very useful; I ate a full English Breakfast for £5.90 after the race. The start/ finish area was excellent. The machine printing out details of your run a few yards from the finish line was missing this year, which was a shame. The drinks stations were fine for me; thanks to those who operated them.
I like the mug; there was a nice medal too! The Mars bar was most welcome. Definitely a great race, but a long way from home for me, so I'll probably only do it again if I can get a lift there. So long as it's a Kent Grand Prix race that's quite likely. Date of review: February 12, 2013
In short: Very challenging but enjoyable race In full: Second time I've run this event - A course for those that like a challenge rather than PB hunters. Very well organised, good atmosphere (though VERY cold!)and nice to get a medal that actually has the event and year on for a change. Little things like that make a difference!
