In full: Good challenging race down hill and flat for first half a few twist and turns on the way back then two hard hills to finish with before a flat 600 meters to the finish. The start area could have done with a coffe bar and the council could have cut the grass and opened the car park. All told a good race and lets hope we can have some more races in medway. In short: I enjoyed this run through the docks. In full: Lots of marshalls, two water stops. One bad hill at about 8km. I thought it was really good and hope that more people do it again next year. It is a bit expensive but is for charity and some charity 5Ks are nearly as expensive! Date of review: June 21, 2009

In full: This review is for the Medway Town and Gown 10K on 21 June 2009.
This was the first running of this event starting in Brompton (Gillingham) then snaking through the Chatham Historic Dockyard before circling St. Mary's Island before returning to the finish line. The course itself was pretty good, with a fast first half and a slower second half caused, primarily by a short sharp shock of a hill around 8km.
In terms of positives on the day, the main one seemed to be the number of marshals, I have never seen so many marshals covering a 10k! A section of Dock Road was closed off which greatly helped negotiating 2 sections of the route. There was a reasonable amount of support dotted around parts of the route, especially on St. Mary's Island. There was a gentle atmosphere at the start and finish. On a personal level, this was my 2nd fastest ever 10K time.
In terms of any whinges, the entry price had possibly put people off from entering (notwithstanding that this is a "charity event", £15/£17 (affiliated/unaffiliated) is quite steep for a 10K). This is evidenced by the relatively small number of finishers (217). There were not too many club runners at this event, perhaps this was a marketing issue? Parking was probably a problem for non-locals doing the race.
Overall, I think this was a positive start to a badly needed road race in urban Medway. With a population of 250,000, it is disappointing that there was only one road race per year in the area until now (Cliffe Woods 10K). Touchwood it will build on the positives and grow year on year. In short: Treacherous down hill start, not so great uphill in the 9th kilometre, but very pleasant and traffic free for the main part. In full: Its a bit tight at the start and there weren't that many runners. Any more and the narrow steep decline on gravel after the 1km sign could be a bit dangerous. The finish was a bit steep too to get back to race control but with a flat final k to use up any reserves in the tank. There is only one main road to cross (twice) which was well marshalled and the rest of the course was pleasant and away from any traffic. Good race overall and I hope it is back next year (Medway has been needing a race since the Hempstead Half Marathon ceased). Date of review: June 21, 2009
