In short: Good PB potential but organisation could do with improvement In full: I have run quite a few half marathons for comparison.
Overall I felt the PB potential lived up to expectation and the course was great, apart from the long out and back section at the end which was mentally hard work.
The start was good with lots of space. Luckily I didn't need the toilet or I probably would have missed the start and finish of the race whilst still queueing- more toilets next year would be great.
The finish was the biggest disappointment, the volunteers organising bags were clearly doing their best but at one point the chap next to me pointed out that they seemed to be creating an art attack that neil buchannon would be proud off!
The long walk back to the buses and following long journey back to the city centre was expected so I can't complain but I can't help but think there must be a better way.
I did enjoy the actual run though and I would do it again though, having grumbled! Date of review: June 26, 2013
In short: Better organisation could make this a very good event In full: Some improvements - baggage excellent, finish area better - but some lapses - poor goody bag and T-shirt, no sports drinks, poor results service (STILL some errors on webpage). Fast start but the middle section drags, slow circuit round Gosford House, still no improvement to the post-race transport. Date of review: June 21, 2013
In short: Lovely place to run, no dull bits other than the long switchback. In full: This was my first Marathon and I enjoyed it even though it was a very warm day.Plenty of water was provided and energy gels were available and needed.Didn't enjoy the lack of regular distance signage over the last couple of miles and no countdown markers for last mile,I had no clue where the finish line was as you cannot see until you turn a corner and then its a 100 yards over uneven plastic matting. The long walk to the shuttle buses back was poor as well. But overall I would go again as Edinburgh is so nice. In short: Less than smooth route In full: This was my first marathon, and I guess a gentle introduction. However, even with no experience there were some things I did not enjoy:
A higgledy piggledy course route - not the lovely open roads I was anticipating but tight corners, 180 switchbacks and a very random loop at about mile 18 seemingly tacked on to make the mileage up.
What supporters there were, were great. But the friends I came with said getting to a view point was nigh on impossible. Miles 15-20 seemed in the middle of nowhere and if you went there to spectate there was no way you'd make it back to the finish line in time. Partly due to traffic.
The start being in two waves was annoying as myself and one friend were in the first wave, but our other two friends were in the second wave at the other starting point, our spectator friends didn't know where best to stand.
Queues for toilets at the start a bit ridiculous
Goody bag, well, not good.
Energy stations a long time coming and not many.
Good things: Medal and t-shirt
Plenty of water on offer
Fairly flat route
Only took 3 minutes to cross the start line Date of review: June 17, 2013
In short: ok race but poor organisation need to look at how Chester do it! In full: This was a mixed race with some good aspects but was badly let down by key organisational elements.
The start suffered from an ability to hear the PA and a lack of toilets. The course was good apart from the loop section the surface was appalling. it certainly wasn't as fast and flat as the organisers suggested. there were plenty of well manned water stations but there was a complete lack of energy drinks not a great idea.
My biggest complaint however was the organisation at the finish. the finish area was chaotic not well organsaised and a nightmare from a spectators perspective. the goody bag was terrible although the T-shirt was excellent!
The transport back to the start was terrible a 1.6 mile walk half of it up hill is a crazy idea at the end of a marathon whoevers idea that was has clearly never ran a a marthon! the fact it took 90 mins to get back to the centre didnt help neither did the bus dropping off near dynamic earth was't great
The organsiation would need to get significantly better before I'd consider running it. The organisers should take a trip to Chester in October to see what good organisation looks like Date of review: June 11, 2013
