In short: Hills, hills and more hills!
In full: Why did pre-entries have to queue to collect their numbers whilst on-the-day entries could just walk up and quickly get a number?

In short: Still smiling with satisfaction 3 days later
In full: The grand Pavilion Gardens are a lovely setting for the Race HQ, assembly point and finish, & whilst it’s a busy little town, parking wasn’t too much of a problem. By anyone’s definition of the term - this route is hilly. From the start it’s a steady 623 feet climb over 2.8 miles before the turn-off from the main road down a country lane. By this junction you’re almost 1,600 feet above sea-level and the panoramic views over the Peak District are a great distraction. Over the next 4 miles there’s 900 feet of descent with one long 2 mile section a great opportunity to build up some momentum. After which there’s an ascent of 500 feet over the next 1.5 miles. Another quick downhill section and there’s another 200 feet climb over 1.5 miles as you re-enter Buxton. Except for the beginning and end stretches the course is rural and the bit of zigzagging around the large leafy houses towards the finish seemed very much out of context. It was very satisfying rounding the park to be greeted by quite a large crowd at the finish. This was great value for money & a well organised race, complete with mile markers, frequent stations dispensing handy bottles of Buxton mineral water, a pace car, & what was a clever touch - rubber mats over the many cattle grids. It was a pleasantly cool & dry day and even the wind couldn’t lessen my enjoyment. I’m just surprised more runners - than the 368 who participated - don’t compete in this. Probably not one for novices though.

In short: Great race, but take it easy early on.
In full: Really enjoyed Buxton again having run it for the first time in 2010. This year I learnt my lesson and took the first 3 miles very steadily - it paid off and made the second big hill at 7 miles much easier and I was able to enjoy the run back into Buxton instead of crawling home!

No roasting heat like last year, but strong winds up on the top of those hills added another dimension to the challenge!

Overall a really good race, through fantastic scenery and huge thanks to all the friendly encouraging marshalls - you make a big difference.

In short: toughest half ive ever done but scenery is beautiful
In full: i run this with my mate who unfortunately hadnt trained very much and it showed. Didnt help matters when we started 5 mins late and took us til 2 miles to catch the back marker. By 8 miles he was finished after taking on the hills and it spoiled my race. However the scenery i got chance to take in were simply stunning. The race begins with a steep 3 mile incline before dropping down half a mile and then by mile 4 you had reached the top and you sweep down 3 miles. This part of the course is beautiful running through the countryside with the sheep literally at the side of you.The support is as expected very thin as you are running in the middle of nowhere but the runners were friendly enough. You finish in the beautiful setting of the pavilion gardens and as i said by the time we'd finished most of the support had thinned out,i imagine it wouldve been wuite good for most of the other runners. This race is certainly a challenge and should not be tried as your first half! thoroughly enjoying though, thankyou Buxton, i'll be back next yr :)
