In short: Good Race - Improved since 2011 In full: I used this as a training race for London and managed a PB. As with many of the smaller events, it is dominated by club runners but it seemed welcoming non-the-less. The course now starts at Goldthorpe Leisure Centre and still has two loops but goes out towards Barnburgh, and the lovely steep hill there. Although the roads were still open, there wasn't too much hassle from traffic - although the odd idiot liked to fly down the country lanes in their chav-mobile. Date of review: March 18, 2013

In short: Extra hill on new course In full: Well organised by Barnsley ac. Tweaked course from when I did it in 2011 with an extra 2 climbs. I PB'd by 2min which made it good in my eyes.
Small but definately worth doing Date of review: March 17, 2013

In short: Wel organised (apart from the parking) and friendly. In full: A well organised low key event. The problem with the cars all turning up at the start area only to be sent elsewhere was a bit of a mess but there was plenty of parking within a couple of minutes walk so it was not a disaster. The marshalls were friendly and the rest of the organisation was fine.I knocked 5 1/2 minutes off my previous best time so it was definitely a quick course (just a shame I was left off the results page). Enjoyable run and I think I will do it again. Date of review: March 26, 2012

In short: Friendly marshalls, room for improvement with goody bag In full: Had run the route beforehand so no surprises there. Start was a bit chaotic but on the whole no major problems. Bit disappointed with goody bag contents but love the t shirt design. Will be back, hopefully when 100% fit and not 30%!!!! Date of review: March 19, 2012

In short: Friendly race In full: Apart from the parking issues, instructions sent to the the start but everyone had to turn around to go back to the car park, otherwise well organised, nice friendly marshalls and friendly running crowd. Despite announcing anyone wearing earphones would be disqualified I saw 4 different people listening to music! Nice t shirt. Date of review: March 19, 2012

In short: Good 2 lap race/Great marshalling/terrible goody bag!!! In full: My first South Yorkshire Half Mararthon organised by Barnsley Athletic Club was overall a good experience with only a couple of disappointments. As an unafilliated runner it was good to pit myself against local club runners, to my surprise I did well. I managed a huge pb shaving 7 minutes plus of my best GNR time. Finsihing halfway through the field, I was very happy with my performance.
High points, the course was enjoyable with two laps of a reasonably undulating roads taking the competitors through villages and country lanes alike. The small-ish field (approx 380) was friendly and consisted of various levels of abiltiy accross many diferent age groups.
Low points: There were far too few toilets avaialble at the start, for me there was no time to queue to relieve myself before the start of the race, others were forced to pee in the trees! The traffic management on the whole was good and only on one occasion did my safety feel compromised by other road users! I must however complain about the goody bag, it is bordering on embarrassing, a t-shirt and a money off voucher for Sweatshop, some asics basics (sweat band and a lip balm) and that was it!!! Surely with nearly 400 runners the organisers can attract some better sponsorhip to make this into something memorable, just a couple of gels and a bottle of energy drink would have made it more fun. I am unsure, but I feel there may have been some official timing issues on the day. My race watch clocked me at 1h 47m 30s, however my official time on the barnsleyac website is 27s slower?? There is no reason I can think of for this which is obvious, did anyone else have any timing issues?
I would like to say a huge thank you to the marshalls and volunteers and local residents for being so encouraging and enthusiastic on what was a day of very mixed weather, sun, showers and we even had a couple of hail showers to contend with.
I will be runing again next year and hope that the small issues are ironed out and a much better goodie bag!!!!
